Renaming creatures and users' names

1. Can a creature be renamed? If yes, how?
2. Why did my nickname lose its capital letter? I thought it was everyone getting all-lowercase, but Orderedchaos, for one, is a counterexample.

Not sure about the username thing but you can change a creatures name in the town hall (located under the explore tab)

Orderedchaos has a capital because they have the option because they are a mod. All normal users have all lower case.

And then what comethail said about critter renaming

In answer to your second question. All normal users have lowercase usernames. Being able to use uppercase letters in a username a perk of being a mod/staff member

I'm a bit old-fashioned, then - I assume that an uppercase first letter is an integral part of a word being, well, a name 😃
