Structure & Science!

• The Soap Sandwich: A bubble wall acts like a sandwich: a layer of water molecules sits trapped between two outer layers of soap molecules.

• Surface tension pulls the liquid film inward as tightly as possible, forcing the trapped air to push outward and settle into a sphere—the geometric shape with the smallest surface area. Even if you use a square or diamond-shaped wand, surface tension still pulls the bubble into a round shape.

• The shimmering rainbow colors on a bubble are caused by thin-film interference, where light waves reflect off both the inner and outer surfaces of the ultra-thin film and overlap.

• A standard soap film is less than a thousandth of a millimeter thick—making it thinner than one-fiftieth the diameter of a human hair.

Why Bubbles Pop!

• Water slowly evaporates from the liquid layer, thinning the walls until the film can no longer hold the air inside. Gravity also pulls the liquid downward.

• Dry hands or dusty objects break the water particle attraction, creating a weak spot that pops the bubble.

About Bubblynx Eggs

Bubblynx eggs are quite a mystery because they're not so much eggs as they are bubbles! While a normal bubble will pop easily, the bubble "shell" that protects the developing creature inside is strong and flexible. If the bubble begins to look dry, you may place the egg in a bath; it will float at the top of the water. The egg can be popped by a sharp enough object though, so be careful where you keep it!

About the Bubblynx Creature

Bubblynx are affectionately referred to as "Bubble Cats" by many citizens of Ark because of the bubbles found on their heads, around their necks, and on their tails. Their fur often has a somewhat "soapy" feel to it and when they play in water (as they love to do) they can become completely covered in bubbles for a short time! Bubblynx owners often comment that in addition to feeling soapy, the creatures faintly smell like soap.
