“Heith…” she said, reaching out her hand. “Not for me. It’s not worth it.”

“Not worth it?” he repeated, raising his voice for the first time in a long time. “Not worth it?” He walked over to her, shaking his head and motioning to some invisible object. “Don’t you understand that you’re dying? Don’t you understand that I’m trying to save you?”

She looked at him with care, her frail arms wanting to hold him. “Not that way. You can’t do something like that for me.”

“We’ve tried everything else, Cynthia! Literally every single option – even the ones that were under the table – and this is our only choice. Don’t you see that?” he urged, taking her hand as his brow furrowed.

She looked into his eyes. “One life. Thousands of people fighting, destruction and soldiers dying, for one life. I’m not worth the cost, Heith.”

He stepped back and grabbed his blond hair in exasperation. “You’re not worth the cost? You’re worth everything to me, Cynthia! I need you every minute, and you’re being brutally ripped away from my hands!” He turned and walked the opposite direction passionately. “We’ve crossed off every box, gone through the motions, and you’re still sick!”

“Sometimes that’s just how life is. It’s not fair, but we’ve got to accept that. Sometimes we’ve done everything we can.” His back was turned to her, but she watched his shoulders fall and his head tilt downward.

He closed his eyes. “I can’t just sit back and do nothing while you’re dying. I love you so much, Cynthia, and to me it’s worth all I have to heal you. I’d give anything – I’d give my life and thousands of others for yours if it were possible.”

“But it wouldn’t be right, Heith,” she whispered.

“I don’t care about what’s right anymore,” he muttered detachedly, looking back at her over his shoulder. “None of this is right. I care about you.” He reached up and grabbed his coat, putting his arms through the sleeves and lifting up the collar. He looked at her. “And I’m willing to do anything.” He opened the door and went out, letting in a wind that chilled the cold room even further.

About Cerberus Eggs

While in the Fiery Shadows Cerberus eggs glow bright enough to read by. Once removed from that plane the glow steadily dims as the energy of the Fiery Shadows dissipates until only a faint glow is left.

About the Cerberus Creature

Cerberuses are highly intelligent and can be taught to do almost anything. However, getting all three heads to work together makes training them especially challenging. The simplest thing to teach a Cerberus to do is guard duty. If you are unfortunate enough to visit the Fiery Shadows you will find that most of the important places and things guarded by a Cerberus.

All Cerberuses have the innate ability to manipulate the ambient energy that flows through the Fiery Shadows. This ability must be trained to bring out its full potential. Cerberus trainers with the skills to bring this ability to its full potential are few and far between. A Cerberus who has been trained in the ways of energy manipulation are forces to be reckoned with.
