SOME (probably cool) SHARK FACTS:

➜ they don’t have bones! instead, they have cartilage (their teeth are made up of enameloid, similar to the enamel in human teeth)
⟡ cartilage tends to rot rapidly, but it’s possible to preserve the skeleton (albeit with major difficulty)
⟡ another downside is that they don’t have ribs, so they’ll easily crush themselves on land

➜ if you’re wondering how they can replace teeth just like that, it’s because their teeth are embedded in the gums, not the jaw!
⟡ (think of their teeth coming out in rows like a conveyor belt)

➜ they’ve got the greatest sense of electroreception due to the hundreds and thousands of organs available on their head/snout
⟡ to be specific on what these organs are called: ampullae of Lorenzini

➜ unlike bony fish, they don’t have a swim bladder but instead have a large oily liver (since oil’s less dense than water) and use dynamic lift (fins pointed downwards like birds and airplanes) in order to keep their buoyancy!
⟡ (same goes for bottom-dwelling ones, despite their main characteristic)

➜ only some sharks enter a state of tonic immobility (which is like “acting dead”) when their snout is touched or they’re flipped over

➜ so far, there’s only one shark species that’s omnivorous and that’s the bonnethead!

About Dogfish Eggs

This bright egg appears as though it would be cold and slimy to the touch, with the way it shines like water in the light. However, try to pick it up and you'll instead be greeted to scratched hands and disappointment. Dogfish eggs have a very rough, almost sandpaper-like texture and usually require thick gloves to properly hold without injury.

Healthy Dogfish eggs smell very strongly of seawater. If this scent ever begins to fade, something may be wrong with the creature inside.

About the Dogfish Creature

The Dogfish is a fairly rare sight in Ark's vast oceans. Tough and intimidating, they are apex predators whose giant and powerful jaws can even tear through the tough shells of turtles. Despite the Dogfish's terrifying appearance, they can be highly curious towards species that they do not normally perceive as a threat, such as humans. Reports of the daring few who have swam amongst them have revealed that they can become playful and almost puppy-like, flocking around the diver with giant smiles on their face—though these toothy smiles are pretty chilling, this is a friendly gesture. Dogfish attacks on humans are incredibly rare.

A curious quirk of Dogfishes is their inability to completely flex their necks—similarly to other shark and cetacean species, their short necks are very rigid. To make up for this, their slick bodies contain rather elastic and flexible spines. Their torso's internal structure is comparable to that of a feline, despite their outward canine-like appearance. This allows them to swiftly twist and turn in all sorts of angles and positions.

Dogfishes are known to be able to survive and walk on land, provided their rough skin is kept sufficiently hydrated. However, they will never venture too far past a large water source.
