DianeSkinner the Gleggo

When I first fell in love with these quirky tenacious dogs almost no one talked about them, there was no talk of conservation. At best you could talk about conserving the land they were on by promoting saving other big & popular animals. Co-existence with them was almost unheard of. (Though back then, there were a couple tribes that had formed a cooperative partnership with them, but that was a very rare exception. And each of those packs were small in number.)

Through Diane's love and commitment to the species over the years, bringing her expertise from helping the movement for saving elephants, she was able to (with the work of other amazing people) bring this canid back from the brink of extinction. Over the decades as she learned more about the species she adjusted the action plan. But because of her their numbers were able to double each decade.

When I first heard of the AWD they were already an endangered species, and not long after an outbreak of rabies decimated their numbers further. Their fate looked quite bleak (back then it was almost unheard of to hear of such staggering losses,) But now, even where there are setbacks, there is hope.

Side note: I hadn't really heard of the name before outside of Star Trek. It kept nagging at my brain that I had heard it *somewhere* before, but it wasn't until looking up Diane's information that I now know.
(And was saddened to learn of her passing -_- )

I knew I was going to name one of the Gleggo after her the moment I seen their release... but the sad news made it all that more important to me.

I had planned that it would take hours of reading for me to write up a dedication for her, but her Husband posted such a beautiful (and concise,) heartfelt tribute.
