Expert diggers, the Marya work together to build massive tunnel networks beneath the island. However, they avoid tunneling near The Volcano, as the ground there is both unstable and too hot for them.
Marya tunnels are typically narrow, designed to accommodate creatures no larger than themselves. However, at certain points, the tunnel networks converge and open into vast underground spaces and caverns that serve as living habitats and bustling marketplaces.
The Marya maintain a carefully updated list of friendly species. These allies are permitted to use their tunnels and gather with them. However, any species deemed hostile to the Marya may find the tunnels collapsing right on top of them. A secret Marya security force monitors the tunnels for intruders—being trapped underground is their punishment.
