Back from the dead!

Carbon - the backbone of life. You know this one for its many forms: Diamond, (Char)Coal, Graphite...

But did you know that Carbon has many, many more allotropes (different forms/atomic configurations of a pure element)? Fullerenes (like Carbon Nanotubes and Buckminsterfullerenes/Buckyballs), pyrolytic carbon, lonsdaleite, carbon nanofoam, metallic carbon... and many more. Carbon's special valency is what makes this possible.

It dazzles as diamond, kills as carbon monoxide, powers our society as many different fuels (renewable and otherwise), powers life (along with Hydrogen and Oxygen) as glucose (and the many, many derived compounds, including cellulose), and fascinates as graphene and nanotubes.

Carbon was also the name of a programming API that let people easily port their old Mac OS 9 and earlier applications to Mac OS X (i.e macosten, my username). Support was dropped in macOS 10.15 Catalina, after a run of about 19 years.

Carbon, truly, is amazing.

...and a Nym is my best creature, so Carbon, being my best name, gets to be on my best creature. 😋 How's that?
