Io was an Argive princess and also a priestess of Hera, wife of Zeus. Zeus fell in love with Io, but didn’t want Hera to know about his affair. He covered the world with thick clouds to prevent Hera from noticing. However, when Hera confronted Zeus, he transformed Io into a heifer, claiming that he knew nothing of the cow which sprang out of the earth. Hera, knowing her husband very well, claimed to like the cow and wanted it as a present. She then sent the cow away and ordered Argus, a giant with a hundred eyes, to keep a watch on it. Zeus, disappointed by the turn of events, sent Hermes to fetch Io. Hermes turned into a shepherd, lulled Argos to sleep, and then killed him. Angered Hera sent a fly to bother Io and this forced her to wander the world. Io was eventually turned back to her human form by Zeus and she had his son.
