Begins with the activation of factor X.

Both the intrinsic (XII + subendothelial collagen + HMWK -> XIIa -> IXa + VIII -> Xa) and extrinsic (VII + III -> Xa) pathways undergo this process of factor activation to achieve coagulation.

Components:
Factor I (fibrinogen),
Factor II (prothrombin),
Factor V (labile factor/proaccelerin),
Factor VIII (antihemophilic factor A),
Factor X (Stuart factor)

Source of zymogens: hepatocytes (all factors), platelets (factor V)
Significance: PT measures coagulation via the Extrinsic & Common pathways (NV 11-15 sec)
Target INR (derived from PT) in patients on warfarin tx: 2-3
aPTT measures coagulation via the Intrinsic & Common pathways (NV 25-40 sec)
-used to monitor patients on heparin (UH, not LMWH) tx
Normal bleeding time (platelet fx): 2-7 minutes
