When these creatures are first born or created, their bodies are already filled with this toxic substance that slowly decays their bodies, causing them to quite literally fall apart. This creates the need for constant recycling or creation of new body parts in order to replace old ones lost. They also use their "saliva," basically made of the same toxic substance, to adhere candy to their bodies. Maybe they do this for food storage, or better yet, maybe they collect candy because they use the candy to conjure new body parts for themselves (instead of having to take body parts from elsewhere)?
