there will eventually be a way for older creatures to get stars.
and YES, you will absolutely know if what you're seeing is a STAR creature in the Cave. it's not hidden.

I'd rather wait to be able to convert my old pets to starred ones. I'm too attached to them to ditch them all just for shiny status symbols.
