Egg Cave is quite the happening place! Visit our blog for the latest updates on everything new that we add to the site — new creatures, exciting worlds, account updates, and unique activities to do!
April Fools! Egg Cave is not converting to a cryptocurrency called CryptoCoins. Egg Coins and CaveCash are here to stay — all of your currencies are safe and you do not have to register for a cryptocurrency exchange to buy CryptoCoins for US$0.10 a piece. Madness! Egg Cave is free to play and will be forever.
Cryptocurrencies have been absolutely huge this past year though, haven't they? They are pretty complicated, as you might've guessed, though. It would be a disaster for Egg Cave if we actually switched.
If you want, you can still "manage" your fake CryptoCoins wallet here.
In the mean time, the Crypto is still available in the Cave through the end of this month.
Since April Fools Day fell on Easter, we've delayed a few of our Easter releases including the Easter Egg Hunt. Stay tuned as we return to your regularly-scheduled Easter programming at Egg Cave.
Over the last year or so, you have probably heard about Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a type of digital currency in which encryption techniques are used to regulate the generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds, operating independently of a central bank. Bitcoins exist on something called the blockchain, a digital ledger in which transactions made in a cryptocurrency are recorded chronologically and publicly.
Today, we are proud to announce Egg Cave's own version of a cryptocurrency called CryptoCoins. It will replace both Egg Coins and CaveCash as something that is technologically superior. CryptoCoins (CC) will be an ERC20 token that runs on the Ethereum blockchain app platform.
To get started, you will need to begin familiarizing yourself with blockchain technology. You will need to understand that your CryptoCoins (the new currency at Egg Cave) will have both public and private keys. When someone sends you CryptoCoins over the blockchain, they are actually sending them to a hashed version of what's known as the “public key”. There is another key which is hidden from them, that is known as the “private key.” This private key is used to derive the public key. You can know your own private key, and everyone else on the blockchain knows their own private key, but the private key should not be shared with outsiders (that is, unless you want your CryptoCoins to be stolen!). Anyone who has access to your private key can access your funds.
What's cool about this: Egg Cave is no longer the centralized bank or distributor of Egg Coins or CaveCash. You control your own currency and Egg Cave can't tell you what to do with your tokens! Your tokens are also not subject to things like downtime or glitches at Egg Cave. They are yours and yours alone!
The value of CryptoCoins will be tied to the US dollar. The exchange value will change over time which means you could gain or lose value. This means that you will be obligated to report your CryptoCoin capital gains on your taxes to whatever country you're currently living in. If you're in the US, please see Form 8949 with the IRS.
We understand that this is a pretty big change but are confident that, with such loyal players like Egg Cavers, that it will be a piece of cake for you to figure out.
Everything that we've talked about thus far is the easy part of cryptocurrencies like CryptoCoins. From here, it gets a little bit more difficult (i.e. what is my wallet address? What is another user's wallet address if I'm not sending to their Egg Cave username? What programming language are smart contracts written in so I can trade?). If understanding this has been too difficult so far, we're sorry to inform you that you may not be able to continue playing Egg Cave because its currency might be too advanced for you.
Egg Cave will manage your CryptoCoins wallet. In preparation for these changes, please visit eggcave.com/cryptocoins and click General Public/Private Key Pair. Using these keys, you can then generate your wallet addresses which is where Egg Cave users will be sending you CryptoCoins. Remember to keep your private key safe and never share it with anyone (unless you want to your coins stolen!).
To celebrate Egg Cave's evolution to a more secure, inflation-proof currency, the Crypto has appeared in the Cave. Find it there for a limited time (through the end of the month, April 30)!

After reviewing your fantastic feedback about the Click Exchange, we feel that we have reached a solution for the Exchange! Based on the informal community vote in previous blog post, we have chosen option 1 to solve the Click Exchange's recent issues. The following changes have taken effect for the Click Exchange:
The Click Exchange FAQ has been updated with this recent information.
Thanks for helping us make Egg Cave a better place for everyone!
Enjoy a brand-new look at the Click Exchange that's optimized for mobile responsiveness and faster page load times. Over the last couple of days, you may have also noticed more creatures are available for clicking there; this is due to some algorithm changes that we are testing, which adds 10 XC to accounts under 10 XC each day at midnight.
Right now, there are 10,000+ creatures in the Click Exchange but only a small percentage of them end up appearing on most users' click lists. This has made the Exchange be fairly quiet, with little to do or click. The reason why? XC, essentially, is too scarce.
The problem with XC scarcity is that its distribution is skewed toward the most active participants. This isn't a problem in itself, but it leaves less XC to go around for the little guys, people who are new to Egg Cave (i.e. starting with 10 XC), and people who visit the Exchange less frequently. The top 100 Exchange participants own 94% of XC wealth. When even one person from the top 100 wealthiest XC holders decides to not participate in the Exchange for a period time, the total XC in available circulation could be zapped by as much as 15%.
We are considering, with community discussion and ideas, changing the way that the Click Exchange works so that there's more to go around for everyone and ultimately, more creatures to click and give stats to.
Solution: give 10 XC to all Exchange participants with a XC balance less than 10 XC each day. This injects fresh XC into the Exchange and makes many creatures available for clicking.
Potential downside: inactive users can freeload off the Exchange. A proposed solution is to remove inactive users' creatures from the Exchange after 1 month.
This solution is currently live and is in testing at the Click Exchange as we speak. If you've noticed more creatures appearing there, that's why.
Solution: to ensure that XC distributions never get too skewed, XC balances could be reset for all users site-wide at the start of every month. This amount could be 10 XC or something else like XC equal to the number of creatures you have on your account. Everyone is equal and works their way "up the ladder" so to speak by being active participants every month. There are no runaway skewed distributions that worsen over time.
Potential downside: people may feel disappointed that they lose their XC at the end of the month.
Solution: using brains and math, we could write a system-wide algorithm that automatically redistributes XC from the big fish to the little fish. You would receive a notification that XC has been taken from your account.
Potential downside: algorithms are never 100% fair and people may feel slighted by the system and feel penalized for being active participants. Overall, this idea is the least attractive to us at Egg Cave (tyranny!).
Solution: convert XC into a one-time use currency (i.e. XC are not transferred between accounts upon clicking creatures) that is purchasable by Egg Coins. The conversion amount could be something like 10 EC = 1 XC. You increase your XC balance not by clicking other creatures but by "topping up" your XC balance with Egg Coins earned from feeding, trading, etc.
Potential downside: this solution has the least negative effects in our view. It also feels the fairest to everyone. But it means that you have to use your EC to get XC. This is a brand-new Exchange model altogether that would need support from the community to work well.
These are three solutions that we have thought of for fixing the Click Exchange, but what do you think? Solution 1 is currently in testing at the Click Exchange as we speak (and has been for the past couple of days). Do you have other ideas? Submit what you like and don't like in the comments below.
