🧄 BBQ Shredded Tofu 🧄
Author: Sam Turnbull

Just 8 ingredients and super easy to make. Use it any way you like- pile it bun for a pulled tofu sandwich, layer in a taco or in a burrito, use it for lettuce wraps, top on a baked potato, scatter over nachos. Make-ahead and meal-prep friendly. Gluten-free and oil-free options.

Prep Time - 10 mins
Cook Time - 33 mins
Total Time - 43 mins
Servings - 4

Ingredients

🧄 1 350g block extra-firm tofu, drained and shredded (see step 2)
🧄 1 tablespoon light oil such as canola or vegetable
🧄 1 tablespoon soy sauce gluten-free if preferred
🧄 2 teaspoons chili powder
🧄 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
🧄 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
🧄 1/4 cup vegan-friendly BBQ sauce
🧄 1/4 cup water

Instructions

🧄1. Preheat your oven to 350F (180C). Line with parchment paper or lightly grease a large baking sheet.

🧄2. There is no need to press the tofu as it will dry out in the oven. Simply drain off the excess water and pat dry. Use the large side of a cheese grater to grate the block of tofu into shreds. Set aside.

🧄3. Mix the oil, soy sauce, chili powder, smoked paprika, and garlic powder in a large bowl. Add the shredded tofu, and use a spatula to gently toss to evenly coat the tofu in the seasonings.

🧄4. Spread the tofu evenly over the prepared pan. Bake for 28 – 33 minutes, stirring the tofu halfway through, until the tofu is browned. For chewier shreds you will want to bake them a little longer, or for more tender shreds bake them a little less.

🧄5. Heat the BBQ sauce and water in a pan, and then stir in the baked tofu. The tofu will absorb some of the liquid and it will soften to tofu slightly making the most perfectly meaty texture. Serve hot as a sandwich, in tacos, on nachos, in lettuce wraps, on a baked potato, any way you like! Or allow to cool completely before storing in an air-tight container in the fridge for 3 – 4 days.

Notes

🧄 Oil-free option: sub the oil for vegetable broth, aquafaba, or water.

🧄 BBQ sauce: feel free to substitute BBQ sauce for any other kind of sauce.

🧄 Tofu: extra-firm tofu is essential for this recipe. I tried other firmness, but even firm tofu was too soft to grate succesfully. So make sure you get extra-firm.

About Torget Eggs

Torget eggs emit trace amounts of radiation. Under normal circumstances, amount of radiation is so minimal that it is not harmful.

However, unethical and wrongful chemical experiments have been conducted by criminal scientists using Torget eggs and their radiation. In these experiments, the radiation signature of a Torget egg was amplified by an electromagnetic field. The supercharged Torget eggs were then placed on both the left and right sides of the heads (brains) of humans to see what the enhanced radiation signature might do.

These experiments were stopped by the Town Hall years ago. However, the criminal researchers were quite skilled at recording their findings. In an analysis by the Science and Research Center, it was found that Torget supereggs enhanced a person's psychic abilities and some people even demonstrated forms of low-level mind control of other living things. Today, it is suspected that the Town Hall possesses technology to conduct radiation sweeps of large sectors of the island to ensure that Torget supereggs don't exist.

About the Torget Creature

Torgets belong to the second smallest family of dragons in Ark. The flame that they produce is indeed real and does produce heat but it is very small and, strangely, does not have the ability to burn those who come in contact with it. Torgets cannot start fires with their breath and cannot defend themselves with fire which means that they are relatively harmless. But this does make them easy targets for predators, so Torgets require a great deal of protection to fully mature.

In terms of temperament, Torgets are very simple creatures that crave affection and enjoy giving it back. They aren't fighting creatures, so they need encouragement to stand up for themselves when wrongly intimidated.
