πŸ₯Ÿ Crispy Wontons [Deep-Fried + Air Fried] πŸ₯Ÿ
Author: Jenn Wong (Plant Based on a Budget)

Deep fry or air fry vegetable and tofu crispy wontons until crispy golden outside and tender in the middle. A crowd-pleasing, delicious appetizer, side, or snack!

Ingredients

πŸ₯Ÿ Β½ medium yellow onion
πŸ₯Ÿ 1 small carrot
πŸ₯Ÿ Β½ block of extra firm tofu drained and pressed
πŸ₯Ÿ ΒΌ cup of teriyaki sauce
πŸ₯Ÿ ΒΌ cup of soy sauce
πŸ₯Ÿ 1 (50 count) pack of wonton wraps
πŸ₯Ÿ Oil for deep frying
πŸ₯Ÿ Sweet and sour sauce for dipping optional

Instructions

πŸ₯Ÿ 1. Mince the onion and the carrot in a food processor.

πŸ₯Ÿ 2. Add the pressed tofu to a large bowl with the teriyaki and soy sauce. Marinate for 10 minutes.

πŸ₯Ÿ 3. Coat the bottom of a pan with oil and heat to medium-high. Add minced carrot, onion, tofu and any excess sauce to the skillet.

πŸ₯Ÿ 4. Using a ladle, crush the tofu until it's crumbly. Constantly flip until the ground tofu mixture is thoroughly cooked. When finished cooking, let cool.

πŸ₯Ÿ 5. Once the mixture has cooled, apply 1 tablespoon of the mixture in the center of a wonton wrap. Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle using a small amount of water to seal the tofu mixture in. Repeat as many times as necessary.

πŸ₯Ÿ 6. On medium-high heat, fry the wontons until both sides are lightly browned, set aside the finished wontons to cool.

Notes

πŸ₯Ÿ Have a bowl of water: To dip your fingers in to seal the vegan wontons.

πŸ₯Ÿ The wonton shape: We keep things simple with a single fold, but feel free to try other shapes (i.e., bringing all 4 corners together in the middle OR folding the triangle then bringing the outer corners together).

πŸ₯Ÿ Don’t overcrowd the wontons: When deep frying, adding too much food can cause oil temperature fluctuations, leading to an oily, greasy disaster. In an air fryer, the air-fried wontons will steam if too close.

About Mishqen Eggs

Mishqen (pronounced MISH-ken) eggs are often confused for a very elaborate and ornate flower arrangement. Be careful not to pick one up in a park, marriage ceremony, or funeral as they may be incubating at that exact moment (and they do not like being moved).

Mishqen eggs require a lot of sunshine to hatch; sunshine exponentially increases their hatch time. Some Arkians, when springs are cloudy, use sunshine lamps to accelerate their growth. The more sunshine, whether real or artificial, the faster it will hatch!

About the Mishqen Creature

In order to witness the beautiful exquisiteness of Mishqens, one will have to travel outside of the bustling hub of Ark City toward the farmlands to find one. Mishqens like to roam free in big, open spaces and are very adventurous. They do not like enclosed spaces, loud noises, or crowds of people (thus not existing in Ark City's urban farms!).

Mishqens are known for producing a rare type of flower that is not naturally occurring on Ark: the Mishqen Crown. It's exactly that: a crown that you can wear of rare flowers that emit a pleasant perfume. Some Arkians seek to wear Mishqen Crowns on their wedding day. Normally farmers do not allow the removal of a Mishqen Crown for human purposes, as it is thought to shorten the Mishqen's lifespan, but some farmers can be bought with large sums of money by Ark City's elite and wealthy upper class.
