What if

What if everything was made up? The world, your family, your friends – what if it was all just a lie and none of it ever really existed?
That’s how I felt when I woke up one day.
I knew no one. Coming out of a coma I was told that I had been asleep for 50 years, and somehow my body had simply shrugged off any type of aging. I was just as I had been when I was 16, 50 years ago. How would you react when you heard that your parents were dead and gone, your siblings were all married and had children, and everyone had given up on your almost lifeless body years and years ago? I was a living wonder in that hospital; the doctor who discovered me awake was my previous doctor’s son. When the rest of the doctors heard that I had not aged, a feat previously thought to be impossible, they all wanted to perform tests. They seemed very disappointed at my refusal to be their guinea pig, and they went outside my hospital room to discuss this.
I looked around the room, the technology much more advanced than anything I had seen before, though the resemblance of their ancestors was still visible. I heard the doctors and nurses outside talking.
“What does it matter he doesn’t want the tests?”
“It’s the patient’s choice, Rachel.”
“But it’s never been seen before! All of what we’ve been told has been wrong, all because it’s never been fully tested! This boy hasn’t aged a minute since that car accident he had 50 years ago. We could use what we’ve learned to preserve the finest of presidents, famous artists of our time - save those who would prematurely die until a cure is discovered! Imagine; future generations speaking with the George Washington of our time! The oldest living man could exceed so much greater than 969 years! All we need is more information on this, Joseph. Just think of what we could accomplish! We’ll make billions for our discovery!”
“None of that changes the fact that we can’t do it against his will!”
“It doesn’t have to be against his will! We’ll put him back under and run the tests. He’ll never know it happened. And besides, it might keep him living even longer. He’ll thank us for it later, I’m sure.”
“But-”
“What about all those dying people out there, Joe? Don’t you think they deserve another chance at life? That they deserve the information this boy could hold?”
“…But Rachel-”
“You three, go get the tools. I’m the head doctor here, and we’re going to put him under and run those tests.”
“Are you sure you’re making the smart choice here?”
“Future generations will thank us, Joe. Your rich family will thank you. Of course this is the smart choice.”
My eyes widened as I realized that I had to get out of this hospital. I’d just woken up from my coma, and this is how I was greeted? Man, what are they teaching about respect in schools nowadays? I thought. Great, now I sound like an old man. Well, I am 66 years old. Quite an unfortunate number, if you ask me. Add one more 6 and you get what I’m in the middle of right now. I rolled out of bed and fell onto the ground. Ouch. I crawled to the window of the room and looked down. And down. What is this, the 40th floor? Looks like we’re not getting out that way. And now I’m a schizophrenic. Wonderful.
I looked closer at the vehicles, something catching my eye. I strained my eyes. Was that car driving itself? And that one? Was that car floating?! I shook my head in disbelief, but then turned from the window. Advances in technology weren’t important right now. I had to escape. I moved around the room on all fours, my frail arms and legs carrying me. I have got to build up these muscles. How am I going to get a girlfriend like this? I stopped as a realization came to me. Sara.
My shoulders relaxed and my body collapsed into a sitting position as all the life seemed to drain out of me. No, Sara. She's probably married to some other boy and has children now. There's no way she waited around 50 years for me to get out of this coma. I envisioned her standing by my bedside, day and night, waiting for me to wake up. Pain filled my chest as I saw her eyes close, her heart giving up on me ever waking up again, and I watched as she walked out the door. If only I'd told her I loved her. If only I'd listened to the instincts that told me to confess before I got in the car that day...
I heard the doorknob rattle and I scurried behind the door, my memories going to the back of my mind and my survival instincts kicking in.

About Asteran Eggs

The Asteran will only hatch when the sunflower is fully grown so many owners keep the eggs in a safe part of their garden where a lot of sunlight can reach it. Even when the flower is not fully grown, the petals will open during the day and close during the night for protection which can confuse owners who do not know this.

About the Asteran Creature

A young Asteran loves to run. It will run around fields of flowers for hours and during this time the Asteran will help pollinate the sunflowers in the field. The sunflower on the Asteran's back helps provide some nutrients but not enough for the creature to survive so a daily meal is required to keep an Asteran healthy.

The Asteran will take a floret from the sunflower head and place it next to its owner. This is a sign that the Asteran loves the owner and the floret should be cherished greatly since the Asteran will only remove one in its lifetime.
