SUTURES

All medical students are required to know how to perform the basic suturing techniques (with proper gloving, donning & doffing, draping, aseptic technique) upon graduation. Suturing is the approximation of wound edges without gaps or tension. The size of suture β€œbite” and interval between bites should be equal in length and proportional to thickness of tissue being approximated.

What do sutures do?
- Reduce dead space
- Support and strengthen wounds until healing
- Approximation of skin edges to reduce scarring
- Reduce the risk of bleeding and wound infection

Main types of sutures:
1) Non-absorbable - used to provide long-term tissue support, remaining is walled-off by the body’s inflammatory processes or until removed manually. Examples: Silk, nylon
2) Absorbable - degraded by the body over time, loses tensile strength within 60 days. They are commonly used for deep tissues and tissues that heal rapidly. They are an option when it is not possible for the patient to return or for children for whom suture removal may be difficult. Examples: Vicryl, Monocryl

Types of Stitches:
Interrupted Suture
Continuous/running suture
Continuous subcuticular suture
Mattress suture
Purse string suture

Knot-tying:
A knot (strictly a bend or hitch, since a knot is a node or knob) is an intertwining of threads for the purpose of joining them. Secure fastening results from friction between threads and this is affected by the area of contact, the thread surface, the tightness of the knot and the length of thread left projecting from the knot. Most commonly used is the surgeon's knot. It adds an extra twist when tying the first throw, forming a double overhand knot to provide more friction and reduce loosening while still having to tie the second half of the knot.

About Lui Eggs

Lui eggs can be found floating on top of ice-cold lakes during the winter time. Their feathers are often frozen this time of the year, so they cannot extend and are very brittle. They continue to require freezing waters to hatch.

About the Lui Creature

Lui chicks love to play around on snow-blanketed banks of Ark's inland lakes. When chicks are young, they stay very close to their parents who mate for life. Once the chick reaches its second evolution, it will often fly away to another lake to begin its life. Occasionally its parents will visit but most often not.
