Capping: addition of methyl group to the 5’-end of mRNA to prevent degradation by exonucleases and allows it to be recognised by the cell’s translational machinery.
Splicing: the removal of introns (intruding sequences) so that exons (expressing sequences) can fuse together to form a continuous sequence.
Polyadenylation: addition of a long chain of adenine nucleotides to the 3’-end. Improves stability and facilitates export from the nucleus.
