It all just started with one measly cough.
And it ended with a billion deaths world wide...

You just live in a small town, everybody knows everybody, neighbors are friendly, and everybody lives under the impression that they are totally safe, that no harm could ever befall them. Note I said "impression."
You're in high school, one lovely post-summer day. Summer Vacation is in just a few minutes, and everybody's on edge, watching the clock tick down the moments. Everyone leans in forward as the wait ticks down to five, four, three, two, one-
"COUGH!"

The bell rings, and for a split second, nobody moves. The world is stuck in slow motion, a glance is given to the person who coughed, that ugly, loud cough. A girl nobody really knows that well, the one that was new, and just faded to the background. But it's summer vacation! And everyone leaves without a second thought.

The next day, more people fall prey to the cough, all throughout the day in public you hear it, loud, raspy coughs.
But nobody gives a second thought. The only time somebody stops to think is when they read the obitchuary about a high school girl that died of unknown causes.

A week later, the streets are deserted.
A town is dead. Only some are alive, hidden far away.
This cough is a killer, and it's become worldwide.

When I hear no reply, I grow stiff. What if they ARE sick? I could die in less than 24 hours. Then, I see a large, wolf like dog padding up to me. 'Aw crap.' I mutter under my breath. 'I can die of a measly cough, or rabies. What two lovely choices...' I get up, and slowly start to walk backwards and away. No way am I staying here, too dangerous. I've got to find a better place to stay. Then, my instinct kicks in. Instead of turning around and running away from the dog, I look the dog in the eyes, and then charge straight ahead, as fast as I can.
