I love people who shamelessly regurgitate the incorrect statements of others, especially when those statements are controversial. It never ceases to amaze me how uninformed and ignorant much of the adult and young adult population is on matters of politics, government and our country (the United States) as a whole.

Most people do not realize that America is a representative democracy, and that our votes mean little to nothing. We vote to show our preference; our representatives vote depending on the masses and what the majority dictates. Do they always do this? No. So it's always a pleasant surprise when people are absolutely shocked that the majority voted for one candidate and another was chosen.

This aspect of government was put into place by our Founding Fathers, who realized that the masses may vote to put someone in power who was a horrible choice to begin with. They enacted hundreds of impediments intent on restricting our voter power in order to protect the government and the country as a whole. If we had a true democracy, called a direct democracy, the United States would not exist. It is as simple as that.

I love it when I finally have a teacher who understands politics and government. It's such a refreshing breath of fresh air.

Yes, America's government system does seem a little different. I don't know much about it since I don't live there, but I think New Zealand has a great system. True democracy. Our votes do count, and 74.2% of the voting age population voted; without laws of compulsary voting.
