Ugh I have no idea how to solve this brainbuster... Help please?

Sherlock Homes and Dr.Watson were chasing an escaped convict across the Yorkshire Dales without the use of a map or compass. Neither of them had been to Yorkshire before. They came to a crossroads where the signpost had been knocked down. They wanted to go to a village called Littlethorpe, which was one of the four villages on the signpost.
How could they be sure of going in the right direction without asking anyone?

I think I know the answer, but let me think on it a bit more. My idea is iffy >.<

Edit: How did they know it was one of the towns on the signpost if it was knocked down? So the signpost may have been knocked down straight to where they could read it.

Thats what I think, but its tricky. Because the teser says "They wanted to go to a village called Littlethorpe, which was one of the four villages on the signpost." Does that mean they saw it say that? Thats where Im getting stuck.

. Because the direction arrows were on the knocked down signpost.

. Because the person they were chasing left footprints

I don't think they're right, but worth a try.
