You go to "My stuff" Click on "My cove" and you can see their health

If you wish to, and almost everyone on eggcave does this, you can book your eggs with Tim's and he keeps them 0 happy, which leaves them alive.

Like views, levels update at around 3AM ECT. Your creature can gain levels if you feed, click or view it.
