What exactly happens when a creature dies?

I know that if a creature's happiness reaches 0 they have a chance of "dying". But I want to know what really happens when they die. Do they go back to their egg stage, are they removed from your account, etc.?

they are removed from your account and the name you had becomes avalible to other users
