So from what I understand, you start out with a common egg, then someone else offers something of a little more value and you keep building up until you have something you're satisfied with.😊 Correct me if I'm wrong 😉

Because someone really did start out with a paperclip, then got a pencil for it, then got a soda for it, then got... so on so forth.
Months later the guy had gotten things like a boat, a house, so on so forth.
