< and ) Together it does this:

<(o-o<)
<)

Why does it do that?

Basically, it's a side effect that occurs as a result of site's cleaning user inputs to avoid hackers.

As you might know, the symbols <> are used in various coding languages, particularly HTML and javascript. Because of this, it's possible for unethical users to type code into a post and have Egg Cave run some unauthorized, dangerous code. Many sites will "clean" the inputs and convert the arrow brackets into their "entity" which is the same character but will not signify the start and end of code.

The entities of the angle brackets are &lt; and &gt; That's where the server gets the semicolon and why the forums like to insert that winky emoticon - because it sees the ; and ) together even if you don't.
