I think Miki and Aykay would get along. Aykay used to be deaf/blind, so she'd understand what it's like to have an extreme disability. And Aykay hates sound because of her hyper-sensitive hearing, so she'd probably like Miki's telepathy way better because it's not actual sound.

Mainly, the virus has a history of it's own. It wasn't supposed to cause these kinds of mutations, it was simply an experiment for curing chronic lung disease, which often occurs with newborns. Now, the cells of the Virus was supposed to eliminate the diseased cells stuck on the walls of the baby's lungs. Since the first few tries were successfull and the disease disappeared, the scientists began infecting more babies with it, who had chronic lung disease.

The outcome, however, was very different. The lung disease was gone, but at the age of 11-14, it returned (reason for the coughing and spitting out blood and lung failures I mentioned in the plot) and the cells of our virus started spreading anew, not helping the child's organism but infecting it more. To this point, many children die from the chronic lung disease, but those, who survive until the virus cells spread entirely, mutate. The virus infects a different part of every child's body, either their skin and bones (with shape shifters, contortionists and those whose powers are connected to their physique) , their mind (with psychics or telepaths), body reflexes and so on. In short, they receive powers. 😸

So technically that's the main reason for the disappearance of these children. The scientists know they made a mistake so they tried to conceal it by erasing all evidence of their doing but they couldn't kill such incredible beings, so they decided to lock them away...
