Goddesshood (Story!)

"You know, it's not as awesome to be a god as you'd think it would be. I know from personal experience. Yep, you heard me right. I'm a god. Part of the Council of Gods that's pretty much in charge of everything, overall. But when you've been doing it for so long it doesn't feel that special, just kinda ordinary." I grinned and the toddlers circled around me grinned back.
"Did you know that gods can die?" I continued. "Well...kinda. Sorta. If you stabbed me, it would look like I died, but then I would just be reborn into literally the next creature to be born. I gotta tell you, it's really weird to go from being a human to a bumblebee, or a fish to a cow. It's annoying, 'cause you can't do much when you're a baby. You know what I hate? Those bugs that spend seven years underground growing up and not doing much, then they get to go up and fly around for all of like a day before they die. Veeeeery annoying. I still keep all my memories, though.
So, all of us gods are god of something: the ocean, trees, volcanoes, whatever. I personally am the goddess of poetry, art, storytelling, books, et cetera. It's fun, but it kinda sucks though. But we have to pretend we're normal when we're not actively doing something godlike, and we try to do those when we're alone. You know, I think my second grade teacher, way back in 1953, was the only teacher ever to hear the excuse "I need to leave the class for a second, 'cause a guy in New York has writer's block and I need to help him." She wouldn't let me leave, though, so then I "daydreamed" for a while. She had a lot of trouble coming up with and writing down lesson plans for the next week or so."
I looked back at the preschoolers, leaving the mists of the past. Every one of them had their hand raised.
"...Questions? Great. Fire away," I said, smiling indulgently.

"You were alive in 1953? You said you were 18!"
"Well, yeah, that WAS when I was born, but...Didn't I explain how that works already?"
"Have you ever been a boy?"
I shrugged. "The next thing to be born after my body dies...I have like a fifty-fifty chance of either a boy or girl...what do you think?"
"Have you been alive since the beginning of the Earth?"
"Yup. Longer, even."
"The beginning of the universe?"
"Now you got it."
"You're really a god?"
"Yup."
"Are the gods from religions real?"
"Yeah. Actually, some gods are in more than one religion. Weird, I know. Just...confusion in you mortals. But just 'cause there's gods doesn't mean all the holy texts are right, of course."
"So are you Athena?"
"The Greeks called me that, yeah. But not everything they thought about me was true. You have a god and you make up things about her to make her sound more legendary...Ugh."
"What happens when you die?"
"Me or you?"
"Us."
"...I'm not going to answer that question."
"Why not?"
"I don't feel like it. No more questions now, it's naptime."

"Awwww..." The three- and four-year-olds dispersed as some of the other volunteers got out the mats. I sighed. Another bullet dodged. Why did Sam want to ask about dying? That's going to be a long time away for all of them...Oh well. I doubt they'll even remember a week from now, I tell them so many far-fetched stories about my heroic adventures - they just love hearing about things like that, real or not - I'm sure they won't remember the truth at their age when they forget most of what I told them by the next day. I shook my head. They were just so adorable, I couldn't resist volunteering here - what can I say, toddlers are my one weakness - when they said we could do volunteer work somewhere for extra credit. I may be a god but that doesn't mean I can run two miles in ten minutes. I'm lucky if I run just one, and that's just a C+.

You'll have to wait longer for the next part probably, this is as far as I've actually written so far. I know what's going to happen next, though. 😸
