The Setting

In the early days of the world all landmasses were one. A tremendous upheaval split the world apart. The smaller islands drifted across the world. The largest landmass became known simply as "The Vale", and in time, the natives forgot the truth of things and remembered only the creation myths.

The residents of the smaller landmasses, however, taught their origins as history and not myth, though the distance was deemed an ocean too far to cross. They accepted that they would be forever separated from their brethren and the Matriarch. Fate is what it is, and some are more fortunate and some less so. They interbred, changed forms, survived, but always believed The Vale was a real place, and that some cruelty had separated them from their siblings.

About a century ago a shadow crept along the edges of the largest island. This shadow has steadily crept and crept until its presence and influence can no longer be denied. Younglings began to disappear. Eggs found cracked open. Now dark figures move openly in sunlight. The residents of Ishuun are being plucked, one by one, like so many apples from a tree. Their enemy is unknown. All attempts to fight the shadowy figures have failed.

The few survivors have clustered in the northwestern port city of Mat'uk. High Cleric Iaild stole a dozen purebred eggs and bolted into the sea two moons ago, saying he would swim to the otherside of the world to find The Vale and Matriarch. A marginal effort to locate him and the eggs was mounted but quickly abandoned when the city fell under attack.

Some of the remaining residents of Mar'tuk cling to scant hope that Iaild might actually make it to The Vale. There is very little hope left to cling to, so Iaild's quest is as good as anything else. Even if Mar'tuk falls perhaps Iaild will get the eggs to The Vale.

More pragmatic residents believe their precious eggs were wasted on a fool's mission and Iaild is dead in the vast ocean.

Most, however, know none of this, and exist in the day-to-day struggle to find the secret of their dark enemy.

The Enemy

Has never spoken to (as far as any Ishuuni know) anyone, explained their reasons or their motives. They are like slips of shadows, inky black and purple-glossy in sunlight. They generally take on a slender, long-limbed humanoid shape but can also torment their prey by taking on familiar shapes. The handful of creatures that survived a Shadowy Encounter say they attack with claws that pierce the skin but rend the tissue beneath.

Wounds left from these encounters do not cause physical harm. They seem to cause some kind of harm that exists in the blood or under the skin.

They seem to be a form of corruption made physically manifest. Alicorns who can trace their pedigrees into antiquity seem able to do the most harm to them with their horns. Some other residents seem able to harm them or resist them, but it's unclear as to why.

It is unknown if any Ishunni have betrayed their own kind to work in league with The Enemy.

The NPCs

High Cleric Iaild
Stole a dozen purebred Hippocampus eggs a month earlier and disappeared into the ocean. He left a note explaining he was going to find The Vale and Matriarch. Depending who you talk to, Iaild is a fool, a traitor, a coward or a hero.

Crowned Venerdyr
The unofficial ruler of Mar'tuk. She is a young Alicorn female who has found herself thrust into the position mostly because she has been able to harm The Enemy in several confrontations. She is intelligent, resourceful and brave- but she is terrified of the Ishuuni who look to her as if she has the answers.

Magistrate-General Sirqyr
Magistrate General of what little is left of the Mar'tuk forces. He is older, pragmatic and secretly believes it is all a matter of time before the end comes. His warrior's heart will not allow him to admit that and he would rather see everyone fight to the bitter end.

The Rules

All standard site rules about appropriate content apply.

Only mewlynnmagic or her designated minions may play the NPCs.

Keep the OOC to a minimum.

1 PC per person. You may create additional minor NPCs directly attached to your PC (eg, a mate, a parent) for flavor, but these should never be used IC.

Shennigans will see you banned from this thread- do not spoil it for everyone else. Play proper.

PC Guidelines (Player Character )
I am going to leave this fairly open so people can bring their own ideas to the table.

NO MARY SUE PCs.

This is a land that has been living under dire threat for nearly 5 generations- every PC can be assured to have some dark, unhappy things in their past.

ONE minor magical ability per PC

You may give your PC one MAJOR non-magical ability in which they are expert, if you wish to.

All PCs must be adults, no children

PCs have no knowledge- at all- of Iaild's fate. Logic dictates he's floating dead in the ocean somewhere and 12 hippocampus eggs were sacrificed for a fool's quest.

No PC directly knows any of the major NPCs, although they may be one degree removed (example: someone is an assistant to one of Iaild's confidantes).

Form to join:

Name:
Species:
Gender:

Appearance:

[start roleplaying]

Example:

Name: Ides
Species: Alphyn
Gender: Male

Appearance: Mottled grey fur, black mane, off-black scales, silver eyes. Appears to be old, withered and thin, though it's hard to know if it's actual age or the result of repeated attacks.

Ides was working in the bakery. It had been a large, bustling place with many workers once, but the withered Alphyn now seemed to swim in the empty space. He ambled from station to station in the back room with an unsteady gate thanks to a nasty limp in his rear leg. Still, his fore feet were keen and ready to work as he set about checking how the dough was rising, kneading, and turning the dough step by step into bread.

BE NICE TO AMATEUR ROLEPLAYERS.

reserved for space

You may post.

My form

Name: Rosaline
Species: Alicorn
Gender: Female

Appearance: Rosaline has sea blue all over her body, with a pure white horn with cerulean blue flecks almost covering the horn entirely. Her eyes are a pure light baby blue with white sparkles, and her belly has a soft patch of light purple. Her hooves have white stripes, one on each hoof, and she has a deep crescent moon engraving on her right front hoof. Her tail has streaks of pale green, midnight blue, and lavender.

Minor power: Has the power of keen sight.

Rosaline, looking out to sea. Somewhere out there, Iaild was spreading the word, getting help. He had to be, had to. It was all she and anyone else had really, a slight hope for the future. But in the waves, she saw nothing. Was that good? Was it bad? Who could say, although deep inside she was resigned to the worst. Hope, hope, she refused to let go of that.

Still, she couldn't exactly sit by the sea forever. There were things to be done! Not that she had a propper job; she was the person who found herself doing lots of little errands for everyone. Sending messages, getting things well out of reach. Recently she'd started a little project. In her spare time that wasn't spent sending good thoughts out to sea, Rosaline went around trying to liven up the place. Quite litterally, she knew a little magic for bringing plants to life. It wasn't terribly impressive, anything larger than a daisy and all she could do was make it less wilted, but it was something.

And that was what she needed, something. If she kept herself busy, she sometimes managed to forget the doom and gloom that was her life. So that was why she was always helping others, for her own selfishness. Ah well, here she was, middle of town, time to find a thing that needs doing.

@rosaline_kaye This is really cool, I'm joining no matter what you say ;P

Name: Yang
Species: Wyvern
Gender: Male

Appearance: Large for a wyvern, with lean muscles. His body is inky black with ripples of grey along his underbelly. His eyes had two white circles around them. His actual eyes are pitch black. Purple flecks are clearly visible along his inky scales. His talons and teeth are bone white. He has two curved horns atop his head, one being white, and one being black.
A spear is embedded in his left shoulder, broken off at the end of its shaft.

About the small magical power, perhaps a bit off poison that can paralyze his victims?

Yang took flight, gaining speed as he felt the rush of wind blowing past. A great plume of dust had risen from the power of his take-off. He flew up to a large bluff and softly landed. A vast forest stood before him, bearing lush green sanctity. He crept into the forest, drool dripping from the side of his mouth. He flew up on a branch and waited. Moment later a deer walked by underneath. Yang grinned with satisfaction, as the deer hadn't even sensed his presence. He lunged forward and grabbed the deer in his massive talons.

Yang uses the sharp tips of his wings to pick bits of bone and fur out of his teeth. The venison had made for a lovely meal. He gazed out over the ocean. "I wonder if that fool Iaild has gotten where he's going."

@pirateseaz *tacklehuglick*

Rosaline spotted something out of the corner out of her eye. "A Wyvern, company!" Rosaline exclaimed. She hasn't seen anyone today, is was quiet in Mat'uk today. Unusually quiet. Ignoring the grumbling of her stomach, Rosaline took off towards The Forest to meet the unsuspecting Wyvern.

@rosaline_kaye Let's get @jupiter_hollow up in dis' piece xP

Yang's ears began to twitch. Something was coming towards him, and at an alarming rate. He quickly turned towards the noise of the intruder and puffed out his wings. He was surprised to see an alicorn galloping his way.

@jupiter_hollow *ebil laughter*

@pirateseaz

Rosaline saw the wyvern bare its fangs and spread its wings. Rosaline gasped, staggered back, and tried to talk to it. She tried to hide her fear by smiling. "Hi, I'm Rosaline.." Rosaline cocked her head. Behind the ferocious creature there was a deer, half eaten. Her mouth watered.

Yang considered the alicorn for a moment, not sure the course of action to take. She didn't seem to be a threat. He curled his wings back up and kicked the deer over to her. "Hello there my dear, they call me Yang," he replied in a gruff, yet elegant voice.

@rosaline_kaye @pirateseaz Can I make two? 😱

Name: Dario
Species: Hippogryph
Gender: Male xD
Appearance: A buffly built electric blue wolf with neon green and moon white woven in the fur of hs underbelly and ears. Multicolor dots rimm his obsidian eyes and the edge of his long sharp ears. A pair of large wings sprout from his back, colored like that of a peacock, a similarly decorated green-blue tail trailing behind him. Two scars marr his thick fur - one trailing across his back, leaving a small path in the space between his wings, and another - settled over his left wing, gracing the middle of it and then continuing downwards to his feathers, most of which are cut off, along with some parts of his skin.

@jupiter_hollow The rules said only 1 PC per person.. but I'll make it two xP

@pirateseaz

Rosaline liked this Wyvern. Ferocious, but kind-hearted. She grinned, and took a heaping bite out of the deer. 'Food,' she thought to herself and she took more bites out of the half-eaten deer.

She washed her mouth in a nearby stream. Rosaline looked over Mar'tuk, and she saw something peculiar.

NPC SPEAKING: Crowned Venerdyr

The young female Alicorn strutted into the dirty streets of Mar'tuk, looking around unimpressed. She was guarded by Magistrate-General Sirqyr and his minions. A huge crowd of Mar'tuk's villagers stood around an old hippocampus. He was carrying a wheelbarrow full of wet, green leaves. "Seaweed, seaweed, SEAWEED!" they chanted. "We're starving! Give us food!" A Hippogryph wailed. The hippocampus kept a straight face, and kept rolling along.

@rosaline_kaye

Yang's ears twitched as he picked up a word "Seaweek". He licked his lips in a cold smile. "I could use a salad, how about you?" he asked the alicorn.

@rosaline_kaye
@pirateseaz

The havoc around didn't seem to bother a certain peacock-tailed wolf, which lay comofrtably in the bushes nearby, completely oblivious (or was just pretending so) to everybody. If anything, Dario felt like he was watching an awfully boring movie. Quarrels were a pretty common sight but the amount of drama here was just unbearable. He felt like taking a nap - yawning, he pondered on his options, but his eyelids drooped closed before he had done any brain work.
The other wolf's whail jolted him from his slumber and he groaned lightly, rolling around and resting his head on both paws. Not that his stomach wasn't growling, but was this hyppogryph seriously asking for food instead of going out to find his own? Blinking in confusion to the situation, he wondered how much he'd missed - during the time he'd been drifting, the argument had gotten more fierce.

@jupiter_hollow @pirateseaz

NPC SPEAKING: Magistrate-General Sirqyr

The crowd start to close in on the circle of soldiers. Screams emitted from a young Angha who was dying of hunger. "See what you're doing to us?!" shouted an old Wyvern. "You're killing the children! Let us eat!" The crowd roared with fury. "If you're hungry, why not go to that bakery right down the alley?" Sirgyr said calmly. "The bakery has PLENTY of food for all of you. This seaweed isn't for you."

Rosaline:

Rosaline nodded at Yang. "Lets go down and see whats going on." She flew down gracefully and landed on a bakery's roof. Not too far away, there was a young Alicorn surrounded by soldiers and a buff Hippogryph. Trailing behind them was a pink Hippocampus carrying a wheelbarrow full of seaweed. She cocked her head. "This is a recipe for disaster." She flew as close as she could to the Hippocampus without getting attacked and tried to speak to her. "Hello? You shouldn't be hauling a barrow of seaweed in public, it's going to cause trouble." The Hippo ignored her and kept rolling. Rosaline snorted and went back to the roof. Then suddenly, the whole crowd ran to the bakery, screaming and shouting, "BREAD! WE WANT BREAD! FEED US!"

@rosaline_kaye

Yang took off straight towards the hippogryph. "Is that for me?" he said, then took a huge bundle in his claws. He took off like lightening back to the buff and knawed lazily on his loot. Then he looked down to see the young alicorn on the roof of the bakery. He took off and landed next to her. "Got our salad," he said cheekily, holding out a claw full of seaweed.

@pirateseaz

Rosaline looked at the seaweed in Yang's claw with awe. She looked back to see if the hippogryph saw. It appeared that they didn't see that Yang stole the seaweed, for they were too busy fighting the crowd. The hippocampus was too tired to mention it. She sighed in relief, took the seaweed and gnawed it. It was surprisingly fresh and delicious. "Wow.. Uh.. Thanks!" she exclaimed. Now what were they going to do about the hungry villagers?

@piratseaz @rosaline_kaye

Awakening from his previous deep nap, Dario righted himself, stretched prolongly and yawned in delight. Tired from the overall sound of quarrels, he trottled leisurely off into the village, looking for some fresh breakfast (more like dinner, actually...). Needless to say, he was hungry too.
His rumbling stomach was indicator enough of that.
