Eggs can level up though clicks/feeds/views. There really isn't a way to tell when, though eggcavern.net has a level calculator.
Level 2000+ creatures are immortal and can not die. Creatures under level 2000 can die if you don't feed them. You can put them in "Tims food shoppe" under the explore tab to keep them fed. (4,500 EC for 60 days for one creature.)
EC can be earned though feeding peoples coves/creatures.

For evolution: If you click "show numbers till evolution" when you click "cove" under the "my stuff" menu, it'll show how many feeds/clicks/views your creatures still need to get to the next stage.

You can also check the "archives" for evolution numbers and the pictures of the stages of creatures. It's under the explore menu.

There isn't really an change in the picture when they're about to change, the number when you click the show numbers to evolution button will change though. If it's at a negative number or a 0 your creature will evolve the next day at 3am ECT.

When the evolution is complete (so when it evolves at 3am ECT) the picture will change.

Also you can put an @ symbol in front of a username to "ping" the person (as I've done here), so they get a notification you've replied to something they said or asked a question.

And I saw that you can get an egg from the Mysterious Asteroid. How are those special than the ones in the Cave? Like are they rarer or something?

There is a very low chance of getting creatures from the Asteriod, and they are CONSIDERABLY rarer than creatures from the cave. c:
