I took a travel off and it went away... all gone.

That's what is supposed to happen. They are one use only.

@fyrekytten See the 'Travels' section of the FAQ:

If I "bring home" a creature, will I get the Travel back, so I can use it on another one of my creatures?

No. Travels can only be used once.
