Have an issue with my laptop, any ideas?

I have a Windows Vista Business laptop I use for Eggcave and gaming, and while gaming on Thursday, my entire laptop crashed.
My laptop is over 6 years old, so this isn't as uncommon as one may think. I turn it back on, and go back to log into my account. I log in successfully but...
My entire screen is black. The cursor is there, but my desktop is nonexistent.

The other account on my laptop is working perfectly fine, but I want my account, because I have a lot of stuff on there I can't recover.

I have tried to
-System Restore
-Start explorer.exe task, but it just freezes Task Manager. Retested and after it unfreezes, does nothing
-Tried mmc using Run
-Tried MCONFIG with no anvil
-Restarted about 10 times

Any ideas as to why my laptop is doing this, and how to fix it?

Have you tried to restart it yet?

@newlife
I never heard of anyone having this problem, weird.
Is your account the administrator?

Several times, same result.

@fakeworld
Yes, both of my accounts are administrators

Your laptop probably crashed. Here is where I should call my dad.
Try pressing F8 and Shift. If not, hold F8 and restart it. That should work.

@channie23

What does that do? Does it pull up the Safe Mode? When using F8 + restart (Safe Mode works for some reason, guess th explorer.exe likes Safe Mode more)

What does the F8 + Shift do then?

Honestly, I don't know. My dad told me to do it once, and it worked.

I'll try it when I tackle it again in a few minutes. I'll tell you if it works

@channie23

Curious, do you use F8+Shift when logged on into the broken account, or when you start up the laptop?

@newlife
I used in while I was logged into, and then I restarted holding the F8. Did it work for you?

@channie23
No, it doesn't. It gives me an error beep (Gosh I hate those) and it doesn't work.
While I'm logged in, I hold F8+Shift, but nothing happens.

@newlife
:/ I'll ask my dad, but for now can you try to shut it down and see if that works?

@channie23

Just did that, going to log in with the account that works and try to delete the registry that may be causing the issue.

@newlife

It could be a sort of virus or bug. Maybe something you have recently installed crashed it.

@channie23

I think it might be. I'm just hoping that this time that I run a virus scan, it'll actually get rid of the 'virus'...

@newlife

I accidentally downloaded something on my computer, and we had to buy a new one. :/ It's probably not that serious, but it would be a warning to you to be more careful downloading things.

@newlife

It could be some type of malware, hopefully the virus scan will be able to detect sonething, if it's there.

I had a similar problem with a computer of mine a while ago. Let's hope that what happened to mine won't happen to your laptop. xP

@channie23
The last thing I downloaded was my game, and that was weeks ago, and I never had any issues with it...

Tried running a scan, AVG wouldn't start up for some reason. I'm going to let it rest before I tackle it again

@despair
I hope it's just that honestly. Because uh xP Can't get another computer until summer, and even then, waiting until Windows 10 comes out

Then I'm at a loss for what you should do. Maybe send it in for fixing.

@despair
Google failed you.

@channie23
I can't do a scan at all. Says the active components are missing.
I'm going to send in my laptop to my friend's dad who's really skilled with laptops (even though he's a surgeon)

@newlife
It might be a memory/RAM problem.

@hybridrainbow
Maybe? I feel it's more of a virus honestly. I can get on one account but not the other, but then again, I can't access barely anything on the other one eue

Deleted • 13 December 2014 at 11:26 PM

@newlife
Have you tried accessing the OS through safe mode? If it is a virus, Norton was recommended to me above anything else for dealing with it.

@hybridrainbow

I've tried to go through with Safe Mode, and it brings up a black screen as well.

I have to go through Safe Mode w/Command Prompt, and then I can pull up the desktop using Explorer.exe. I can't run AVG in that mode either.

Hm, I didn't hear that much good stuff about Norton. Guess I should download it if I ever get my laptop working again.

Deleted • 14 December 2014 at 12:29 AM

@newlife
That's strange.
It's best to leave it to a pro before it gets worse, then. :/ I hope your friend's dad can help.

Really? McAfee failed and another antivirus I downloaded that I shall not name did more damage than all the viruses my laptop had combined... The guy who replaced the hard drive gave me a subscription to Norton and nothing snuck through while I had it.

@hybridrainbow

Wow, if it's really that good... I should try to get it then lol. AVG always guilt-trips me whenever I try to uninstall it.

Deleted • 14 December 2014 at 12:48 AM

@newlife
It never hurts to give it a try, but what worked for me might not work for you since I only stream now. If it is a virus, I'd get rid of AVG. You can get a free 30 day trial from Norton on their site.

@hybridrainbow

I sure hope it does.

...That is even if I can get into my computer. I can't even connect to the internet anymore.

I will, but I will need it until I can access internet on my computer again.

I hate trials .-.
