Doubles in the Cove

I am still fairly new to this game but already I have gotten some either pets I am not interested in raising or pets I already have a copy of. I feel like my cove is becoming very cluttered and I would like to do some cleaning but I am not sure how to do it.

I know that there is the adoption center but the text implies there is a negative consequence to using the feature? That and I rarely see anything in the adoption center which (to me) that the community doesn't use it often.

My question is how do most people clean out their coves? Is it something people do or do most just hold onto all the eggs they get (even if they don't like them.) If there are more than one way people tend to use please list it.

If you want to get rid of some creatures you can always try trading them, giving them away to other users who might want them or putting them up for auction. Or, as a last option you could put them in the Adoption Center, but it'll cost you 4500 EC.
