Here are a few tips:

If you want to reply to someone on forums, ping them so they can get a notification, otherwise they won't know you replied to them. To ping them simply put @ and their username beside the symbol (Example: @hk225 ) or click the small yellow bell icon under their picture.

If you would like to reply to someone who wrote on your wall, you need to write back on their wall or they won't know you replied either (pinging doesn't work on walls).

It might also be helpful to visit the "Help & FAQ" section under the "Community" tab at the top of the page to answer any other doubts you may have.
