Confused on Roleplay

I've never tried out roleplay but i know what it is. How can u act online? Also, do u improvise or are u given a general idea of the story and u have to perform it that way?

It's more like writing a book than acting. You writing back and forth with other users that's kind of answer each other with dialogue and such between your characters and others'. Roleplays usually come with a paragraph or so that describes the plot of the RP, and you set your writing and characters to fit the story being told. It's like your given an outline, and you and other users work together to write the story.

Roleplaying is when you're controlling a character (Or more than one) while making up a story with other people. Most people will make a sign up thread, where it explains the story's plot and all the rules that you have to follow. You usually have to fill out a form including the characters name, history, and personality.

Common rules are no "godmodding" and no "mary sues. " Godmodding is when you're character is all the sudden extremely powerful without reason and to the point where its ridiculous. Mary Sue (or Gary Stu for the male version) is a term for a character that is absolutely "perfect." They usually have unnatural eye or hair colors, are very over attractive, and everyone is either their best friend or worst enemy. Both are very annoying and boring in RPs.

Basically your being someone else for the time your roleplaying, some roleplays are based on games, tv programs, films, books and just general magic roleplays. As a cat you would act a bit like: (Insert character name) Prowled through the forest smelling deer, he/she silently stalked the deer until it was grazing and decided to pounce. Then returned to the clan clearing with his/her catch.

For a Magic Roleplay you would be like: _____ Sees the enemy and hides behind a tree, He/she quickly sent spines of ice in the enemy's way, balls of fire came flying back towards him/her but he/she dodges well and strategizes for the next attack.

If you say.. Doing a Harry Potter roleplay you would:
_____ Came face to face with _____, Each stood a distance from eachother. 'Expelliarmus!' _______ Shouted, 'Wingarduim Leviosa!' Shouted the enemy. ______'s wand fell out of their hand and _______, who was in midair fell back down thump onto the ground again.
