So, I am a senior this year and you know what that means? College app time...thing is, I'm terrified. I don't really know where to begin. Plus, I am retaking the SAT and ACT next month because this time I was able to apply for extended time (I have a 504 plan. Long story short, I go into panic mode mid-test a lot of the time).
Thing is, I'm just not a good test taker and so my scores are not going to be anything remarkable. How badly do you think this will hurt me? I have a good GPA and a rather seemingly well-rounded academic load. I already have one college in mind, but I just don't know where else to look. People on yahoo answers seem to make such a super big deal out of crap test score (and mind you, mine aren't even anything notably terrible. They're just not stellar or Ivy-material, but that's not what I'm looking for, so I think that's okay).

Well, I'm going into my final year of university. And, for me, it was mostly my GPA that was looked at. Although, I live in Canada, so it might be different for you.

But all you can really do is try your best. As long as your GPA isn't 1.5, I think you'll be alright! 😊

@solaris

I wish it worked more like that here.☚ī¸ Maybe it does and people just make a big deal out of everything. xD
My GPA is far from 1.5. xDDD It's actually one of the few things I take pride in.
It just kind of intimidating me because I have a friend who seems to be applying to every school in the country (including a couple Ivies) and I'm afraid to even begin. Then again, he is kind of...really confident. Not vain, necessarily, but he does seem to have the charisma and loud personality that I lack.

@metaphor

I know it's a bit intimidating. From your description, you sound a bit like me actually. I'm not all that confident or assertive, but my GPA is high like yours. 😊
I applied to only two schools though, so, if you're nervous, I recommend applying to as many as you can.

*spasm*

I'm going to 8th grade and nervous. D:

1) Honors Language Arts (How on earth did I get in?!?!)
2) Algebra II Honors (triginometry at the end of the year T_T) *sulk*
3) Spanish 1 (Hola... xD)

And the whole year...
We're going to be talking about careers.
Taking career tests, going to career centers, etc. 😸

I'm terrified...
Because I have no clue what I want to do.
I'm not very smart
But get good grades somehow. D]

@whitefall

Eighth grade was a piece of cake and if you do your work and get good grades, I wouldn't worry about it too much.😋 My biggest problem in the 8th grade was the people to be honest. They treated me like utter dirt.

Thing is, I know exactly what kind of career I want.
I just don't know where to begin looking for a place that can train me for it and that is suitable for me. xD

I'm kind of in the same situation Dx
And you know how parents sometimes compare their children?
My aunt is doing that to me. She's all, "Oh, my son got into UC Irvine & he's becoming a doctor. Are you as smart as him?"
And I'm lazy & the people around my place are actually pretty smart & extremely competative, so it's even harder in this area D:

^^
I named my bird Charlie. Just like every other creature I come across.
My finch has it better. Mah family calls her "little Finch" xD

I'm just beginning this process too, although I'm only a Junior. This is my understanding of it.

GPA and transcripts mean a LOT, as do rec letters. Test scores are important too, but the MOST important thing is to demonstrate a passion for something. This could be done through courses taken, extracurriculars, whatever. It seems as though you have a pretty good idea of where you want to go in life, so this shouldn't be too difficult for you. You could even prepare a resume for college, in addition to the standard application. Something that will show off your dedication and leadership for an activity that you care about.

I want to become a musician. Well sort of.
The problem is: my likes/dislikes change quickly.
It's been like that since I was born. D;
(Also shows in my cove. xD)

I'm pretty sure I'll be in orchestra until I graduate, so it'll so my passion for playing the violin on my record. ;]

@metaphor

I hate to say it, but colleges do look at state test scores. I'm in Michigan, and we take the ACT where the highest is a 36. I got a 22, which is a bit above average.

I also want to get into the pre-pharmacy program. To get in, I needed a 19 on my math portion, but I got an 18 so I wasn't able to fully get in.

But it does matter what classes you took, and your GPA. I would've had the equivalent to Algebra 1, but since I took pre-calculus my senior year, I got to go to Algebra 2. It's really easy for me so far.

But either way, it should be fine. *Nod* I can do my pre-pharmacy program, it's just that it might take me longer.

@ixy1209

22 is good then? Because I got a 23.😊
Although I am going to take it again...

Math was my lowest too, and I think I got 18 on it too. o_0

I wouldn't expect them not to look at test scores. After all, what would be the point? I just worried that I was doomed for not being the best test taker in the world is all. xD

@plookle

I've heard about the showing passion thing, and I'm definitely good there. xD
From what I hear, colleges look for well-rounded people. That's why I never understood people who freak out over not getting a perfect 4.0, but then again, it's kind of hypocritical of me when I'm panicking about test scores.

And I envy all of you who can take math classes several years advanced. You're way ahead of me in that aspect. Sure, I take college courses, but nothing hard like math. I'm horrible at it.😋
