My bird Cindy is a feather plucker, but on at/around her blood feathers. She has so many, and they seem to be causing her pain. I've tried rubbing them (Told if you gently rub them, it help) and she seems to like it. But after I stop she just keeps trying to pull themShe has so many bald spots >3<Were going to take her to an avian when I'm better foot wise, because it's an hour away and I need to be well enough to keep her calm. (She feeds on me. If I'm stressed, she's stressed.)Until then, help?I'm pretty sure if I an get the blood feathers past the pin-like stage; shell be fine.

furfur • 6 October 2011 at 6:46 AM
@MochiDid you clip her wings at anytime?
Deleted • 6 October 2011 at 6:52 AM
Not in a while. I need to get them clipped. But again, foot. If I'm hurting and stessed, it's just going to be worse on her.@Furfur//Edit//Oh!!!I forgot to mentionshe was abused, we got her from a rescuer. It's a bad habit she carried over. Like biting nails. I'm trying to break her of it.

"Often times they get a bad rap and are confused with pinfeathers (those prickly little feathers that stick up and make your bird look like a porcupine. These new feathers, covered in keratin are also associated with molting and if your bird has these pinfeathers, he or she is molting and probably has blood feathers as well). Pin feathers often times make a bird uncomfortable if rubbed the wrong way."Found this here: http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/birdinformation/bloodfeathers.phpmaybe it's those she's pecking at?

They're blood feathers. They have the veinI feel bad for her >x<She's content otherwise. Trying to groom me (she over grooms me too) having a ball running over the bed. Trying to eat my necklaxe. But when she takes a moment to rest, its back to biting.//Edit//Vet says the same thing.Rub them gentlyDon't pull on them Sprits them with a spray bottle to soften them. That sorta thingI just wanna know what else I can do :s
furfur • 6 October 2011 at 7:00 AM
@MochiWell... clipping the wings something causes birds to begin picking... sometimes after they are clipped they will have a sharp edge and it will bother her but if it's been so long that she needs them clipped again them it may not be that... but just in case you could check the feathers and make sure the ones that are clipped are not sharp and if they are try to get the point dull...

@furfurNope, they're soft at the tips. @metaphorI think you know a lot about birds?I may just have to wait it out. Get her and the rabbit to the vets as soon as I an. (Rabbit has a cyst, I think) it will be easier to handle him, so imma try to get him in within the week.

It's a very common trait for a Cockatoo to pluck their feathers. If they are stressed or away from their humans they often get board and pluck their feathers. When I went to get my bird, the owner told me not to get a Cockatoo or African Gray unless I can spend nearly 24/7 with them, or they often get stressed and pluck their feathers.I've herd you can try to give it new things to do, like new types of food, placing cage in a different spot, new toys, or even giving it a feather duster (so it can preen and pluck that instead). There are also some 'coats' you can buy for them, to help keep them warm as well as trying to prevent them from plucking so much.

cafe • 6 October 2011 at 10:49 AM
@yogurtPlease don't get a bird because you want one XD That's how a lot of animals end up as they areBird will always be wild *=*I've had Cindy attack me sometimes XD
yogurt • 6 October 2011 at 10:55 AM
@cafeI can't get one. My mom's too clean that every time she sees something on the floor she goes crazy. T-T I wonder what's going to happen if I get a bird? XD Lol
nkiay • 6 October 2011 at 11:31 AM
@mochiMy cockatiel likes extra warm baths when he is molting, as well as gentle rubbings. Also make sure she has enough things to pick at. Toys with rawhide, rope, even millet, they have a crazy obsession with picking at things, if they don't get out much or have things to occupy themselves with they often pick at themselves out of boredom. Is her cage big enough, do you take her out and let her walk(and fly, if you keep her flight feathers,) around? She is trying to pull out her blood feathers?!? I've heard of plucking but not blood feathers. âšī¸ That's not good!
cafe • 6 October 2011 at 11:33 AM
@nkiayYeahD;And I let her play on my bed.She attacks people, so we try to keep her wings clipped for others [And her]'s safety. And so that may be why she over grooms me when she's molting.
nkiay • 6 October 2011 at 12:29 PM
Maybe just give her extra toys? Or have a couple and switch them around. đ
feathershaft • 7 October 2011 at 5:28 AM
@cafe Nawnawnawnawnawcutecutecutecutecute!Maybe she's bored, so give her some toys like nkiay said. She might be suffering depression, so try to cheer her up. Make sure she isn't in the same room as your kitchen is and anything that might be harmful to birds.Or, really, find her a little boy cockatoo!
cafe • 7 October 2011 at 8:32 AM
the boy cockatoo wouldn't be a good idea. Cindy wiuld just get jealous xDAnd one cockatoo is hard. She's not even really a "pet", she more owns me xD
