Snap: I see Sparrow sitting behind the dumpster for the pastry shop. "Well, that won't work for today." I grumble. I soon find the Chinese shop by it's pungent scent. I sneer. Humans have no sense of smell, apparently.
I crawl into the dumpster, sniffing out the remains of some chicken, tofu, rice, and some other thing. I lick it. It tastes good, so I decide to bring some back to our base camp for River, my favorite pup.

Sparrow: "Jackpot!!!!!" I yell out, dragging a parcially eating cake from the dumpster. I pop open the lid and end up getting icing in my nose. I pause when I hear the laughter of human kids and smell corndogs. I quickly lick the icing off and dart right infront of the kids. I sit down and give them puppy eyes.
Oh, good... I think to myself. The have a female among them.
I whine, playing out the starving dog act perfectly.

Snap: I eat all the chicken and half the rice. I keep the other half of the rice for the pups. It wouldn't do for them to starve, even if they were just helpless scraps of fur.

Sparrow: Several corndogs are tossed to me and I add them to the box with the cake. I pick up the box and go find Snap. I find him and sit there for a while, just watching him. Since being the Alpha of my pack, I could let anyone into the pack, and Snap had caught my attention.

Snap: I notice Sparrow sit down, just a few yards away from me. I try not to let her get under my fur, but it's hard to, knowing that I've left River in an unfamiliar place, and not the Snowy pine forests we're used to. I try not to lose myself in the memories, but I can't. I pick up the rice box and run to our hideout. I know River will have waited for me.

River: I paw at a stone in boredom. It's lonely on my own, and I sigh heavily. But I'm not alone. I have Snap. I suppose I should be happy he's looking out for me. We both share the same past, and we miss the snow covered pine trees in winter, and the sweet smell of the flowers on the leafy trees in spring. Instead, we have hard asphalt, smelly Humans, and scarce food. I sigh, and can't help but wonder when Snap will come back.

Sparrow: I set the box down and bark to Snap. "Do you need food?" I ask, nudging the box towards him.

Snap: I jerk my head around at the sound of a voice. That one! "No, I don't, thank you. I've eaten my fill for tonight, and River will too, just if you'd stop slowing me down." My voice drops to a whisper and I trot over to Sparrow. "Thank you." I woof. "But if you need the food more than River and I do, then keep it. River and I will be full fed tonight." I turn around, pick up my box of rice, and walk in the direction of our hideout.

Sparrow: My spirits are dampened as I trot away, leaving the box there. I glance back, sigh, and keep walking.

Snap: I reach our hideout just in time. The sun is starting to set.
"Here." I tell River. I nudge the box towards her. I can tell she's surprised to see me.

River: "I thought you would never come back!" I nuzzle Snap's nose. "It's OK." He tells me. "After all, we're all we've got, now. Just each other." But then... now I can tell he has an idea. And that I have to stay behind... Again.

Snap: "River!" I yelp. "I have to go back outside. I have to meet another dog that I saw earlier today. There are rumors going around, and I'm not sure if they're true, but I need to find her! If any enemies come, hide under the rosebush." I gesture towards the thorny branches of a small bush, just big enough for River to fit.

After leaving River, I return to the place where the other dog and I met. I follow her scent trail until it becomes fresher. Eventually, I see her. "Hey! You there!" I yell as I run towards her. "Is it true that your the leader of a pack? My kin and I need a place to stay..."

Sparrow: I stop, turning towards him. I nod, "Yes, it is true." I sit down, keeping my head high as a proud Alpha should.

Snap: I see she's determined to let me know her rank in her pack. I keep my head up as well. If River and I are going to be loners, we may as well be proud and dignified ones. I look the Alpha straight in the eye. "My kin and I would be delighted to join your pack, if you will have us. We will make your pack stronger, and I swear will all the marrow in my bones we would be forever loyal." I promise, determined not to lower my head.

Oh, and if the position's not taken, could Snap become Alpha male? In time, not right away, but in time.. 😉 'Cause, another Alpha does make a pack stronger.😋

Snap: I can't say that I'm not surprised at our easy acceptance. I blink. "Can you take me to your camp? Or should we meet here tomorrow? River has already gone to sleep, and I wouldn't like to wake her up." I say, thinking of the shaggy brown puppy in the rosebush.

River: I wake up, drowsily yawning. Snap isn't back yet, but it certainly took him long enough to return earlier. He'd been finding food since sunrise to sundown, today. I shouldn't let his absence worry me. It was probably a long time away, where he was meeting. I fall back asleep.

Snap: I narrow my eyes to think. "if we go back to get River now, and make it to your camp, I think it will be dawn at that time. The sooner the better, I guess." I nod at Sparrow, but say more. " You can either wait here while I retrieve River, or you can come with me." I start to walk away, waiting for Sparrow's answer.

Snap: I hear Sparrow talking to me. Well, I had figured her camp wouldn't be as far away as ours is. "I know." I reply, even though I had no idea. "But ours is." I break into a run, gesturing for Sparrow to follow. We make better time than when I was on my own, racing to get food River, and eventually we arrive at our camp. I go to wake River up.

River: I hear the sound of thudding paw steps in my dream. I run faster, but it is not enough. "River!" I hear it hiss. And I wake up. "Snap!" I exclaim. "Did you bring the other dog?"
"Yes." He replies. "But we need to get a move on so we can avoid most of the Humans in daylight." He nudges me to my feet, and I see a beautiful Saluki standing there. She has a regal look about her, and I know she is an Alpha. I look at Snap. He was almost an Alpha before. Maybe he can be again.

Sparrow: I smile at the pup. "Hello." I glance around and turn, hearing other paw steps.

Dagger: I had followed my half sister's scent. I found her along with two other dogs. "Hello, Sparrow. You've been gone for a while."

Snap: I turn around bristling at the new voice. Sparrow doesn't seem to be angry, frightened, or in the least bit surprised, so I let that comfort me, and I lower my hackles. but I know I must always protect River. Because I made a promise, years ago. "Come on." I say gruffly. "I'd like to make it your camp before sunrise." I say, nodding to Sparrow. I pick up River in my mouth, and even though she protests, I manage to signal Sparrow to lead the way, even with my mouth full of pup fur.

Snap: I nod, indicating I have heard what Sparrow said. I'm glad. My neck and jaw are aching from carrying River all this time, and the first light of the sun is just visible in the sky. Not yet sunrise. River is sleeping, and I am glad for that. She needs her rest.

Sparrow: I gently take River away from Snap, giving him a brake. I slip through a hedge in the park, leading Snap into the new camp that I was making.

Snap: I let Sparrow take River from me. I feel I can trust this Alpha. She slips through a hedge that I haven't noticed before, and as I try to puzzle out how to get in, I notice a small gap in the hedge. I slip through, and I can tell this entrance has been used many times. I ignore the scratches the hedge's branches give me, and I look at our new home in wonder.
