This is a vent, and it is not aimed at anyone in particular, nor is it meant to offend or harm anyone. Please keep this in mind before you reply harshly.I cannot stand bad spelling, run-on sentences, and poor grammar. I can understand if you're 7 or 8, and you haven't really been exposed to literature or proper English teaching yet, but when you're 12-18 and you spell like a 1st grader? That annoys me to no end. Sometimes I cannot even understand a word of what someone has written. It's embarrassing to see people my age who cannot determine the difference between "they're", "there" and "their", and people who think "a lot" is "alot". Not to mention people who write eight or nine lines of text without any type of punctuation whatsoever. Talk about butchering the English language.
taffy789 • 22 December 2011 at 4:13 PM
Wait.... a lot isn't spelt like alot? XD *dies* Oh! And I do the "they're - their -there" thing ALL the time! XD *Is an idiot X3 *
briseis • 22 December 2011 at 4:14 PM
@taffy789 you aren't an idiot. Yes, a lot is actually two words. And "they're", "there" and "their" are easy to distinguish from one another, you just need to know their separate meanings. Didn't you learn that in school?
sky • 22 December 2011 at 4:16 PM
Agreed. When I'm on Facebook even kids that are older than me are using incorrect spelling and bad grammar. Mine's not at all the best example but at least it's not completely bad. Nonetheless, I hate seeing no capitalizations. That's what bothers me the most.
orange • 22 December 2011 at 4:18 PM
I HATE it when people have no capilization or punctuation!!!Agreed@briseis
taffy789 • 22 December 2011 at 4:21 PM
@briseis Of COURSE I learned it in school. 😋 It's just that I type really fast and don't care to check over my posts 1,000 times to maek sure everything is correct. >< And I wouldn't think people would care that much anyway, for I tend to skip over those things in my head. But they didn't teach us the "alot" thing in school. I really don't see why they would've, but now I now, I guess. 😋
smilies • 22 December 2011 at 4:21 PM
When I do it, it's on purpose! 😃
briseis • 22 December 2011 at 4:23 PM
@taffy789 proper spelling is one of the most important aspects of language. If you cannot spell, people will oftentimes regard you as less intelligent or less careful. If you maintain bad spelling habits, writing essays or resumes may become a chore, and in the case of resumes, even one tiny spelling error means your papers go into the trash bin. Some people don't realize just how important correct spelling and grammar are.

One word: Small keyboard >-<I mean, I agree though. I joined this site when I was like 10, I'm 12 now, and my gramamr has improved SO much. I used to never use capitals or emoticons. It was just flat-out awkward. Then you see someone all like, "oh heyz im new 2 egg cave my frined reccomended it 4 me so i think the site is cool how about u". And don't say I'm exagerrating. I've seen things like that before.Even though I know how to spell most words and ALWAYS add capital letters and punctuations, my keyboard is so small, and my hands are always so eager to type, that I very often make errors and typos. I have to double check the several paragraphs I write OVER and OVER and OVER... So that's one reason. But when it's done on purpouse, that gets crazy. I'm personally not picky about it, though. I enjoy deciphering things. *brick'd* |D
crescentfeather • 22 December 2011 at 4:26 PM
@orange You misspelled "Capitalization" 😉@briseis I know, right? If I see someone spell badly, my opinion of them is lowered. Unless it's on purpose 😋

When you have a keyboard, it shouldn't be hard at all to write correctly. I think it looks bad when you don't spell correctly. I find writing so pretty and hate it when it isn't proper. The spelling of 'your' and 'you're' also annoys me. They spell it wrong on cakes too! I'm pretty sure I learned contractions in the first grade. It isn't a difficult concept. You just replace a vowel with an apostrophe. Everyone together now.I've won the spelling bee four years in a row at my school. You don't have to be the best speller, but if you can't spell basic words, how do you plan on doing anything later in life? I've noticed that in school we repeat the same lessons over and over throughout the years, and every year there are many people who don't know basic grammar concepts. It's ridiculous. I've learned nothing in English class since fourth or fifth grade. I hope it's better in high school. I think I ranted a little bit. I ramble a lot. But look everyone! I used proper grammar and spelling throughout. Please try it sometime.
taffy789 • 22 December 2011 at 4:31 PM
@briseis - But there is an obvious difference in that and typing casually. Of course, I will double-even TRIPLE- check my resumes and essays, but I wouldn't expect people to get annoyed with me by accidently mispelling something on a website like this. O_O But I DO get annoyed by people who can't spell at ALL, but not at people who only accidently mess-up sometimes. ><

It's kinda annoying when everyone points out spelling >.<It's not like this is a school. Just let people relax. As long as you can read it, does it matter >.<

Grammar is very important to me. It's always been. It's rare to find me ever not capitalizing the letters at the beginning of a sentence, and use text speak... Even when I'm texting. It really annoys me when someone does this:"Hi.i'm new on eggcaev.I like it.its fun."The sentence fragments don't totally annoy me, for I find them useful in writing. It's this that ticks me off. There is clearly a space after the period. And it takes almost no effort to hit the space bar just once. It's the biggest key, after all... Also, swapped letters are irritating. Yes, it's "cats", not "ctas". You get the point. It's also annoying when people forget about paragraphs. More people should pay attention to English grammar.I've seen brilliant writers on other websites who really should be published... But I end up not reading more than a paragraph of their writing. Why? The improper grammar is just too distracting.I believe more people should take pride in their work by using correct grammar. It effects your life and your job.

I'm a stickler when it comes to punctuation/capitalization/spelling. It also bothers me when people use smilies in semi-professional writing (like literate-standard roleplays). Grammar I give a bit of leeway. I think you can play with grammar to a certain degree, depending on your artistic style.

I don't like when people forget to spell something either. :[There's a girl in my school I can't stand! >.<

Some people are not as privelaged as others and do not get the opportunity for a good education.
cubexline • 17 January 2012 at 7:02 PM
I don't see what is so bad about misspelled words or slightly bad grammar. Now I'll understand if someone types really horribly that is really unreadable or misspells every word, even the easy ones. But if its a simple misspelled word or 2 or a bit of bad grammar, I'm not bothered. What does bother me is when someone other than my teacher corrects me on it. 😋 So I 50% agree with this vent of yours, briseis.
morgana • 17 January 2012 at 7:09 PM
@briseis I agree. It drives me crazy when I'm on Facebook and people are spelling 'what' 'wat' or 'wut'. Or when they put the letter instead of the actual word. @sky Some of the things people post are just SAD.

I sometimes type "they're" as "theyre" and so on because I'm on my iPad and it's a bit of an excuse, I think. x3But you're right, I hatebit when people type poorly.I'm not a dictator about it,But it annoys me sometimes. ^^As long as I can kind of tell what they're saying, I'm fine with it.Example [something that would annoy me]:Hru2day? I liek chnd dnd i wht ur solise cz i lvimIkno u gna say no bt plz? I semm nt 2caer tht u lv chndBybyExample [something I'm okay with]hey! how are you today? I like your solis chand could I have him? I know youre gonna say no but please?I seem not to care that you love ChandByebyeSometimes my messages are messed up because I use autocorrect on my iPad. It sometimes changes words to weird ones that make no sense, if the word I'm trying to type is not in the system, ^^

Have to disagree. A lot of smart people, especially Men, are not able to spell, puncuate or use grammar correctly. This will never go away and with the smart phones now correcting words that are correct it will only get worse. With my Brother I had to correct all that for him he was clueless. Yet he can write a program or tear apart a computer and put it back together working better. I cannot do that.Everyone is great at something and not so great at others. If, it bothers so much and is a sign of intelligent then move along. All you can do 😊 Even I am very relaxed on Forums when it comes to that stuff for myself included. As long as there is not a lot of chat speaking going on.

I don't exactly MIND bad spellers, but I often don't join RPs because the OP (original poster) has bad spelling. Although I would have joined otherwise.xP

@briseis I agree, but I do mess up once in a while. ;0;I try to do my best, but it gets confusing once in a while. Oh well, at least I don't talk 'like dis all da tiem'.
evolutary • 17 January 2012 at 8:35 PM
Incorrect grammar and spelling gets on my nerves. I used to sometimes correct people, but I understand that it's rude so I don't do that any more. What also annoys me if they don't use a space after a comma. Example: i like dogs, cats, birds and horses.Same if they confuse 'to' and 'too', 'alot' and a lot', 'their', 'there' and 'they're, etc.

It annoys me SO much when people talk:Liek dis*rips out hair*
puppyloverlauren • 17 January 2012 at 10:48 PM
I have a computer and some of the pads for the letters were ripped off so it's pretty hard for me to press some. Like the letters "r" and "j" when I press it my finger goes to the side.

takaedakumi • 17 January 2012 at 10:51 PM
@briseis I understand your feeling, it annoys me too, but some people have good reasons for spelling things wrong.
Zac • 17 January 2012 at 10:57 PM
I do share some of these sentiments but I realize this site caters to a younger audience and I've learned to forgive and forget. There is a point, however. 😉My absolute worst pet peeve is Capitalizing The First Letter In Every Word. (It took a while to even type that out.) It makes sentences difficult to read and, honestly, why bother with something that makes more work for both the writer and reader? Just one of those little things that drives me crazy. My 0.02 cents.
bubble_tree • 17 January 2012 at 11:39 PM
What if you're on your phone and it auto-corrects? Or you're typing something that you know is in your head, but you hit the wrong letter. (And, yes, I know, that's why there's an Edit button.) But still. And on Facebook, its Facebook. No one will really care about your spelling as long as whatever you post makes sense.
