I've always wondered...

They say a bride wears white because it's the happiest day of her life.

So why does the groom wear black? We can all think of a sarcastic way of answering that, but I've just always wondered Dx

The Bride wears white to symbolize purity and virginity; although that's not terribly applicable to most modern brides, it's an old custom.
The groom wears black because black has always been the traditional color of male formal wear.

(And no one has EVER expected men to be virgins on their wedding day)

That makes a good point.

Maybe because boys think black is a happy color?

No problem. Really, the social connotations are incredible. As I pointed out in my edit above, virginity and purity are values expected of women before marriage, but no one has ever suggested men wear white suits.
Quite the double standard, but that's just how things were before birth control evened the playing field.

So is the bride. Why should there be a difference?

Deleted • 19 February 2012 at 10:48 PM

Okay so one woman for the rest of his life. I'd be fine with that.

I don't see a problem. >.>
