How would one acquire a Mars Stone without paying?

Then you'll have to wait for Ian to give them away for free (which will probably never happen)

Or, ask someone to buy & use it on your creature and pay them with something valuable of yours (or if they're really nice, they may do it for free) through a trade
The latter is much more likely ;]

if you want a male honk, theyr not that rare. so instead of paying money, wait till you find one in the cave. 😊 or trade with someone else who happens to have one. 😊

there are tons of lots in the TC with male honks, and are only asking for one any egg in return.

sorry ☹️ , but most wont give out CC items to newer players because they may quit. it might take a while before you find someone thats willing to give you one.

Not exactly true. Typically, as long as if you have something to offer and you seem like a good owner, that would be enough.
(Some might also put a limit, like you have to be 1 or 2 months)

I don't play on quiting, but I understand why they might do that.

As others have stated, you could trade for one. 😊 But don't waste it on a common egg, because you can always get another from the cave.
