It is a fairly new, world wide holiday. It's a type of environmentalist movement. At 8: 30pm(or 20: 30) your time, you turn off all unnecessary things that run on electricity in your home for one full hour just for today.

Don't they teach you people anything these days? Our world is dying because of our modern day age spewing out toxins and pollutants making the planet uninhabitable in the near future. It's for the good of the planet. Electricity is one of the sources of pollution on this planet and it eats up non-renewable resources. Just one hour of lessening that use of electricity does a lot of good for our planet's overall health and ability to sustain life. And all that is asked for right now is just for one day once a year.

Edit: If you meant why in the darkness, because celebrating Earth Hour usually includes turning off the lights in your home.
