"A true name is who someone is. If you know it, you understand them completely. You can also cast more specific magic towards them. Eragon, for example, after learning someone's true name, caused them to become blind and compelled them to go to the elvish city of Ellesmera. But of course, you wouldn't know the city, so there's not much point in mentioning it...Are there even elves in your world? But anyway, true names hold a lot of power."

"So, um, yeah. About the five dollars," Grace started. "If I were you, I wouldn't be laughing. I, uh, left it in my other pants. At camp. So, unless we get home, you'll never get it." She shrugged casually. "Yet another reason to find a way home."

"Oh, and the huge squid down there is pretty nice," Grace added. "What are you doing now?" She gave Alex a quizzical look. Was she planning something? She obviously couldn't being doing anything right now, she was sitting with a dragon sitting on her.

Firan yawned and a little fireball landed on Grace.

Grace felt panic sweep over her as her sock caught on fire. She forced some water from the lake to douse the fire. She water crept up the shore. It finally drenched her foot.

"S'okay," Grace said. She had recovered from the surprise. She took off the burned sock. Half of it crumbled into charred pieces. "Poor poor sock," she murmured jokingly.

"You laugh at a sock's destruction?" Grace gasped. She was still joking around, of course. "How cruel." She pushed the charred sock bits into a rather small pile.

Grace sat silently for a few seconds. She finall thought of something. "Do you know how to swim?" she asked Firan. She smiled. Maybe something interesting, or rather, more interesting things, would happen.

Grace dove into the water. She sighed in a satisfied way. Even though she was so far from home, she could still control and bend the water. She didn't need too, though. The small currents were already perfect.

"What is your true name?" Arya frowned. "How am I supposed to know? We've hardly met. A true name is made up of the three words in the ancient language that capture the essence of the person. I don't know your past, I don't really know who you are very well, I hardly know anything about you. It is often hard to even learn your own."

"As I told you...oh, never mind," Arya said in annoyance. "There's no point in even telling, let alone teaching, you all this. You don't see how it's useful and won't even learn. And you don't even have that much longer to live. Eighty more years, if you're lucky, and in about thirty of those you'll be old and feeble. So it's not worth trying to teach you something that you'll never use, and won't even have that much time when you would be able to use it." She stalked out of the room.
