Question in Reguards to Roleplay

in Help & Questions

Hello! I'm not sure who exactly can answer this, but I am going to pose a question (for legal sake). In theory if someone desired to convert THIER ORIGINAL Roleplay into a novel, would there be copy right issues? I was just curious. I don't imagine there would be, but I know Egg Cave has its policies for certain things.

@swimforlife I was wondering the same question. I don't think there is, just as long as you asked the creator of the roleplay or something....

Thank you! You're converting "The War"into a book, correct? I was thinking about doing that to one of my Role Plays.

@swimforlife

You can do so if you

o Ask for the RP creator's permission.

o If you are the RP creator, then you have to ask EVERYONE ELSE THAT RPED. EVERYONE.

o If it's based off of another book, PFFFT.

I think I get what you're asking. You're referring to this clause in the terms:

Copyright

All site designs, text, images, photographs, illustrations, artwork, graphic material, or other copyrightable elements, and the selection and arrangements thereof, and trademarks, service marks and trade names are the property of the Site and its Parent and/or its subsidiaries, affiliates, assigns, licensors or other respective owners, and are protected, without limitation, pursuant to U.S. and foreign copyright and trademark laws. The copying, redistribution, use or publication by you of any such matters or any part of the Site is strictly prohibited. You do not acquire ownership rights to any content, document or other materials viewed through the Site.

The way I read that, I'm pretty sure it's just maintaining the copyright status of anything published by the site owner/mods. Even if a forum roleplay was the property of EggCave, I doubt Ian would want to claim ownership. I say you're good.

You could more than likely turn it into a book but you would have to do a lot of changing from the role play into the novel. Publishers either physical book or e-books such as kindle or nook - require that the work be original and unpublished anywhere else - ie in view of the public in another format.

Now for kindle and nook you can usually have the book published as a physical book - but they require that it not be on the internet anywhere else but with them.

With physical book publishers there are some pretty tight copyright rules that must be followed.

But that being said as long as you have a "Completely" Original novel once you are finished you should be fine.

So more or less if you get your inspiration from the role play that is fine. But I wouldn't make it exact.

I have been writing for years - but so far I have an issue with actually finishing my books..lol

I have a ton of half finished stories that hopefully I'll get back to one day. But because I once thought about publishing I looked into it some.

So yeah, you can get inspiration for a novel in all sorts of places you just cannot have it already out there somewhere else in case you do get published and later someone says "Hey, that was my idea."

Hope that makes sense.
