September 24
Mary and I are excited. Today is our fifteenth birthday. The scientist told us when he brought our supplies, a tray of bread and water and a candle to light out concrete cell. There are three beds but only two of us. As for my birthday, no celebration is anticipated. I am disappointed.

September 26
Today the scientist told us he would bring us a surprise. I'm curious. Maybe it's my birthday present? I've never gotten one. I haven't ever been outside of the Institute or had a family to celebrate one with. I hope we get a good surprise.

September 27
The scientist brought our surprise. I don't really know if it is a birthday present. He brought a small girl with him and told us she is like us. She says her name is Emma. We wondered what her ability was. She can talk to us in our minds. I thought that was cool.

October 3
Mary suddenly improved with her power. Now she can control my actions just by telling me to. I wonder if my power will improve, too. Emma was happy for Mary, but she acted a bit scared, I wonder why?

October 10
Emma had an idea. She thought that if we ever got out of the Institute, we should make a school, a sanctuary for kids like us. Mary and I agreed. We scratched her idea into the floor under the bed so we wouldn't forget.

October 13
Mary is acting moody today. I think her bread was stale or something. I practiced with my power today. Now I can read minds with a little effort. I've notice that Emma, Mary and my powers are similar to each other. I cannot explain this.

October 17
The scientist brought us down to meet a new girl. She's our age. Her name is Pricilla. She acts strange, she twitches and shivers a lot. She also tried to hurt Mary and Emma cried. Mary stopped her and told her to go away. Pricilla listened so I guess Mary used her power. She's getting better at it.

October 18
Pricilla didn't wake up. Emma cried again. Mary told her thats he was a crybaby. That shut Emma up until the scientists took Pricilla away.

October 21
Today the scientist let us sit by a window. He told us that we were in a desert. I asked him where we were. He didn't answer and he sent us back to our cell. I wonder if I made him mad.

October 25
Today Emma told me that the scientist was coming. I told her that he came every day. But right then, he opened the door. How did she know?

October 26
Emma did it again. She said she felt his presence from afar and we told the scientist this. He took Emma away.

October 27
Emma isn't back yet. I'm worried.

October 28
Emma came back. We talked for a long time. She told us that the scientist took her outside the building to see if she could feel the presences of people far away. She said no. He tried again the next day and she couldn't do it so he brought her back. I'm glad Emma came back.

November 5
Today we had a test. I had to read the scientist's mind and repeat the phrase he was thinking of. I passed with little effort. Mary had to command another girl to bring her a glass of water from a table across the room. The girl listened and Mary passed. When it was Emma's turn, she had to tell the scientist who was to the right of her while her eyes were closed. She said the correct answer and the scientist praised her. Then he asked who was directly above her two floors up. She couldn't answer that. The scientist sent us back to our rooms. He was disappointed.

November 7
Today Emma woke us up and told us that she found a hole in the floor behind her bed. We came to look and she was right, there was a chunk of cement missing from the floor revealing a patch of dirt. Mary said that if we dug at it, we could get out of our cell. The scientist came in before we could plan anything.

November 10
Emma told us that the scientist was walking down the hall on the third floor (we were on the first) and then she told us how many seconds it would take for him to reach our room. She was right. We told the scientist and he seemed very excited. He kept calling Emma "a wonderful, wonderful girl" and that she was "helping in the advancement of science". He took her away. I'm scared she won't come back this time.

November 13
It's been two days since the scientist took Emma away. She hasn't returned. I'm really worried now. Mary told us that she'd be back soon. I hope she's right.

November 15
Emma still isn't back. I started crying last night because I thought that she would never return. Mary usually scolds us if we cry, but she didn't. I think she's worried, too.

November 17
Emma is back! I was crying and I hugged her for a long time. Mary cried a bit, too. We were really happy that she was back. But she's acting strange. Emma hasn't said a word since she got here. She hasn't spoken to us in our minds either. I asked her what was wrong and she hit me. I was shocked. What happened to her while she was gone?

November 18
Mary is acting angry. She told Emma to snap out of it and talk to us. Mary even tried using her power, which always works. Emma told Mary to shut up and leave her alone. Mary looked hurt. Emma didn't eat today, and Mary had to force her to eat with her power. At least that worked, and Emma ate the bread and drank the water. She still hasn't talked to me. I'm getting worried again.

November 21
Emma still hasn't improved. I'm really sad. I just want her to talk or laugh, or ANYTHING! I feel like the scientist took the real Emma away and gave us a fake one. I tried to hug Emma and she tried to punch me in the jaw. Mary had to stop her and she told her never to touch me again. I cried and Mary said that Emma was gone and that she wasn't coming back. That didn't help me and I cried myself to sleep.

November 22
Today Mary yelled at the scientist and asked him what he did. Even with her power, he couldn't answer. I wonder what happened to Emma, and who did it? Mary tried to punch the scientist, but he shocked her with something called a taser. She fell on the floor and she didn't move for a while. When she got back up, she started making a wooden stake from Emma's bedpost. I asked her what it was for. She said she would kill the scientist.

November 23
Mary finished the stake. When the scientist came, he didn't open the door. He opened a slot in the metal door and slid the tray of food in. Mary cursed and kicked the door. The scientist left without a word. Mary used her power and forced Emma to tell her what happened. Emma spoke in a funny voice and she told us that he took her power away and injected a fluid into her blood. Mary was shocked and she hugged Emma. I hugged Emma, too. Emma pushed us away. Mary was right. Emma wasn't coming back.

November 24
I heard a scream and I jumped out of bed. Mary was crying on the floor, sitting next to Emma. Emma was lying in a pool of blood and there was a chunk of wood jutting out of a bloody hole in her chest. Emma had stabbed herself with Mary's wooden stake. We covered her with her bed sheets and moved her to the corner of the room. Mary said that she had died thinking that we were her enemies, and that Mary wouldn't let that happen to me. Mary and I cried all day and we didn't eat our bread. I wasn't hungry anyway.

November 26
I woke up and Mary was kneeling by the hole under Emma's bed. She was digging at it furiously with her fingernails and a bedpost. She told me that we would escape and start the school Emma had talked about. Mary also said that she wouldn't let the scientist take me or her away. That gave me hope and I started to dig with her. We might finish the hole soon.

November 28
Today, while we were digging, a beam of light seeped through the dirt. We made it! We're going to escape. Mary moved the bed over the hole and said we would escape in a few days after we got enough food. After all, the scientist was still giving us Emma's meals, too. I'm really excited.

December 1
Today the scientist started to unlock our door. We quickly moved Emma to her bed so it seemed like she was sleeping. He asked us why she was still asleep and we told him that she stayed up late last night. He nodded and gave us our bread and water. Then he asked me how my diary was going. I said it was good. Luckily he didn't ask for it. When he left, Mary and I escaped through the hole. We had to leave Emma behind. Mary pulled the bed over the hole and we crawled outside. That night, we ran and ran for a long time until we could see a city. We're making a shelter out of rocks and plants to sleep in. It's not going so well. I think we'll just sleep on the ground. Tonight was the first night I saw the stars.

December 2
We ran all the way to the city and we ate some of the bread and water that we had stored up. We finally reached the city and we went to a retaurant to eat. Mary commanded them to give us food for free. They did and we ate the best meal I think I've ever had. Then we checked out a hotel room and we decided that we would stay there for the next few days until we decided what to do. The beds here are SOOOO comfortable.

December 5
Today missing persons posters with our faces littered the streets. We bought (Or rather, "received") some new clothes and some hoodies to hide our faces. We're safe for now.

December 14
We met a man like us today. His name is Andrew. He has super strength. He's 19 years old. We told him about our promise to Emma to make a school for people like us and he told us that he'd help. Andrew is going to build the school for us.

December 22
Andrew bought a plot of land and a lot of construction supplies. He told us that he worked with a construction team that would build the school. Most of the people on the construction team had powers and agreed with our cause. Mary and I were very happy.

December 26
Andrew and his friend Erin (her power is super speed) started on the school. They showed us the blueprints and we loved them. They told us the school would be done in a year and a half. I can't wait! Emma would be proud. Andrew also asked us if we celebrated Christmas. I didn't know what that was. He told us it was when loved ones exchange gifts and be merry. Maybe we should try that.

January 24
A small island has been discovered off the coast of California, which is where we live. Erin is from a very rich family and she bought the island for the school's use. I thought it would be good for field trips. Mary said it would be a good training facility. I asked her why and she said that children should be prepared for the harsh world around us. I don't know if I agree with her.
