File Saving Help! D8

So my grandfather takes college courses online and took a long time to type a paper. He pulled up a form from the site and filled out the questions from there. When we saved it, it saved as a different file type other than all of our other word documents. Everytime we try to open it, we get a bunch of random symbol gibberish. I REAAALLLYYYY need help ;-;

@pirateseaz What is the file extension of the document now?

Not sure, but when I try to open it, it asks me how I want to open it (adobe reader, notepad, etc.) and when I click on any of them. It's just a bunch of symbols. Would you like a picture?
