I think it's based on a formula which keeps track of what certain characteristics different characters from a wide variety of media sources have, and then assigns unique combinations to them. Then, when the questions have been answered, it gives you a round-about answer, not always accurate, since some people might give different answers.

For example:

"Did your character die a tragic death?"

Let's use Kyouko Sakura

For some, her death may have been hilarious, but, the general consensus is "Yes". Therefore, other character combinations would have been possible.

Still, COOOLLL!

I have a feeling it tracks down your answers, and keeps the record of what media that you're most likely to use. It answered my Puella Magi questions really well, and the incorrect ones were anime related. It could associate characteristics to, say, cartoons or anime or reality that you've previously answered with.
