So today....

My chorus teacher told us that she is handing out 2 solis for people in my chorus class to try out for. Nobody has ever done a solo part at one of our concerts.

You have to audition for the solo. We are singing Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson..

Any advice? I wanna try out, but I kinda get weird in front of big crowds. We usually get about 1,000-2,000 people at our concerts because band and the orchestra also play.

Any advice? 😊

@harrypotter123698 I did solos many times with the coir and it was great! ^^ I don't know how long is the solo part that you'd do but the shorter it is, the better (if it's your first time singing a solo).

WOAH!!!! I am in choir at my school, and we are also singing Man in the Mirror! 😱 We just started it today, so I don't know much about the solo part in it...

@marie_lily

It's like the part in the beginning and the second verse. The chorus of the song is sung by the whole choir. 😸

The first verse would be sung by somebody and the second verse would be sung by a different person 😊

@kizber I get nervous x3 Was it nerve wrecking?

@Harrypotter123698 Dude. You're in chorus? That's awesome. Are there a lot of boys? There are only 4 guys In the seventh grade chorus. XD

I got a solo when we were practicing a song last term. I just sang out and did whatever... Then midway, I thought, *omg, I'm singing out loud* and then I froze up and stopped.

Are there different grades in your chorus, and are you in the highest grade? The seventh and eighth grade chorus classes always combine at my school, and my hypocrite of a teacher (for other reasons) always chooses eighth graders for the solo, even though they never sing their lines and she says that we're much better.

The grade your in might effect the choice (but I don't know your teacher). Then again, I got a solo way back in fifth grade, so it can happen either way. 😊

If you want a solo and you're comfortable singing on your own in public, do it. If you consider yourself "shy" or "outspoken," it's always good to step out of your comfort zone. But if a solo is scary, that might be a bit too far out of the comfort zone.

You don't seem like the person who would freeze up in public like that, though. I'd say audition, and good luck!

Btw-- Music teachers exaggerate. A LOT. There's a special concert that some kids can audition for, combining some of the school districts in this part of Massachusetts. My teacher said only three or four kids get in, and that it's extremely difficult; but, come on, 12 kids got in this year! That's half of the available spots!

@dreamer

Yup I'm in chorus 😸 there's me and like 8 other guys 😋

I'm in seventh grade 😸 The teacher has a different concert night for each choir grade. 😊

The best thing I got to perform at was a stadium where a NHL hockey game was playing. Me and the select choir sung the national anthem 😸 that was in 5th grade 😊

I just feel kinda weird when 1500 people are in a auditorium staring at me singing 0.0 xD

Ill try out with the song Halo by Beyonce.

Or help me pick a song to try out? C:

@Harrypotter123698 If your auditorium can fit 1.5 thousand people, your school must be freaking rich. O_O It's good that your school has chorus classes separated by grade. We have to perform with the eighth graders, and during our first concert this year, we got crammed together with the bands, orchestras, and sixth grade chorus. The concert was 2 and a half hours and we went on stage near the bitter end... Long story short. My chorus teacher (I use the word 'teacher' lightly) is horrible when I comes to organization. She changed the date like 3 times before the legit concert.

There are like 10 guys in the 8th grade chorus. They all have deeper voices and the 4 boys in seventh grade are sort of in-between, so it's awkward. Actually, together, they do sound pretty good. ^^

For your solo audition. Do you like the song Halo? If you really like a song, and if you can relate to it, it's easier to show that emotion. Genuine emotion is usually something that can help you out with auditioning. I like 'Halo,' but I'm not big on Beyonc (omg my laptop automatically corrected that to add the accent on the e o.o That is so cool!). For you, I think I'd recommend a song by P!nk. I'm looking at some of her songs right now, but I can't think of any that you could audition with. I'd recommend Bruno Mars, too. He has some nice songs to sing too. I love him. ;]

@dreamer

Okay maybe not 1500 but maybe 750? I was exaggerating 😸

True. I like Try by P!nk. I also like So What but there's no way I could reach those high notes. I love Glitter In the Air❤️ One of my all time favorites from her.

If I chose a Bruno song I would probably pick It Will Rain. It's a pretty easy song for me to sing. 😸

I also love the song Jar of Hearts. It's amazing.

I tend to have a higher voice. But there is a kid in my class that has a super high voice. My chorus teacher loves him.

He can't even sing though!!! He just yells out the words!!!

She called me a "back up singer" because I wasn't loud enough!! Well maybe it's because of that kid who screams :/ I hate my chorus teacher.

I'm gonna prove to her that I'm not just a "back up singer" 😋 I mean, the kid can't even sing. His pitch is horrible, he gets the lyrics wrong..the only thing he has is volume. :/

@Harrypotter123698 Yes! Glitter in the Air is so nice. 😃 I was listening to Funhouse, but you most likely wouldn't sing that one. X3

It Will Rain is good. If you want the solo, stay clear of Locked Out of Heaven. ;P

Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri? That's a nice song too.

I HATE when that happens! At my chorus concert, al the 7th-8th grade girls sang two songs on our own, without the guys. There was some 8th grader behind me who was screaming and croaking. I hate to be mean, but it was REALLY bad! And she threw me off a bit, because she had the wrong pitch, AND she's an Alto, while I'm more of a Soprano.

I probably would be a backup singer. T_T I'd love a spotlight, but I'm afraid to have one. I'm forcing myself to sing something in the school talent show at the end of the year, just to step out of my comfort zone and see how it feels.

Yeah. Next year I have to do the talent show.

This kid always gets me off pitch. And it's annoying. He is right next to me in chorus class. 😋

I would never sing Funhouse xD

I wouldn't be able to sing Locked Out of Heaven as good as he does live anyways 0.0

So far I have these considered:
-Glitter in the Air
-It Will Rain
-Jar of Hearts

Are you alto,or soprano?

I've never sung for my school in a choir 0.o but I do sing for my church(I inherited my mothers voice XD).Probably would be to embarrassed for my school XD. But I have acted for drama I did some singing but not very much, I just look over people's heads it makes me feel more comfortable.I usually end up playing the lead bad person, Probably because my teeth are so pointy.I love to sing I sing practically all the time! XD

Edit:
I think theirs different words for guys, but can't remember them XD

@Harrypotter123698 Quick question (since I fail with chorus stuff), which is higher for guys: Tenor or Alto? Obviously in girl's chorus, Soprano is higher and Alto is lower. My teacher classified me as Alto at the beginning of the year, since I could hit the lowest notes, but I can hit all the high notes as well, so I put myself in with the Sopranos. I feel like I'm the only one who ever wants to sing out, though. T_T And the Alto parts in songs throw me off, and they sound awkward. They're pretty low, and the pitch jumps around all over the place.

Yeah, Funhouse is a bit strange. O_O I like the song, but I showed it to one of my friends and she thought it was creepy. O_o Idk.

Do you have any way of posting yourself covering the songs? If you could do that, I could listen to them and help you out in choosing one. 😊

I did a solo once, and I was so nervous! I think you'll be okay 😉 I'm paranoid in crowds. But one warning: when one million eyeballs are fastened on you, your legs will shake. A. Lot.

I sang an entire song in front of people before.
Just practice hard and in front of people you know well.

At the actual place, pretend you are just singing for a friend or family member. Don't think too much/hard. It will slow you down. That's what happened to me the first time, and I started trembling. 😋 Just let the music guide you through.
