Okay I think I understand.

{Jasmine awoke one morning to strange voices coming from the hall. She cautiously left her room looking for who was talking. She lived alone so she knew it couldn't be someone she lived with. After searching through her house, there was no one besides her dog, Butch. She started making coffee in the kitchen when she heard the voice right behind her. It said "What are you making?" She was overcome with fear and turned around quickly. She only saw her dog sitting behind her. She looked down at him and asked, jokingly, "Are you talking to me?" While still looking down at Butch, Butch being a bulldog, he said "Yes I'm talking to you".
Jasmine gasped and jumped backward, not knowing what was going on. She thought maybe she was dreaming, but after pinching her arm, she realized she wasn't.
She sat on her couch for a long time thinking about what was going on, all the while Butch sitting next to her asking her what was wrong.
She decided to ask him what was going on.
"Butch, How come I can understand what you're saying now?"
"I don't know Master, I understand what you're saying now too." Barked Butch.
Jasmine Replied "Please Butch call me Jasmine. Maybe God gave me the ability to talk to animals as a gift for being nice to all animals.." She pondered.}

It's the first time she can talk to animals.
At the age of 18.
So a year before the SUPER program opens up and the public knows.

If this is a flashback to just a year ago, shouldn't she have been able to talk to animals for four years before the flashback?
