"Storm." Storm corrected, snapping her pocket knife shut and throwing that over as well. She could tell he was prying.

"Yeah whatever. If you have something special, you want to use it, no matter the cost." She roed her eyes, angry at herself for being so greedy and lazy as to resort to using her power. It was a weakness of sorts.

"Greed often overrides common sense, I suppose. Though some of us do get a better contract. Touching mirrors, repeating certain manatras. I just got played a bad card, I guess." She held out her scarred arms, a small humorless smirk gracing her lips. "And yet, naive as I was, here I am." She pulled on a jacket.

"So, are you a contractor? You look guilty to me."

"Yea, I am. I figured it was pretty obvious since I said 'we'." He replied, opening up the knife. He wiped it on his pant leg. Who knows how many times she used it to cut herself. Could never be too careful. He stuck it into the can and began to cut it open, continuing to talk, "I can bend metallic substances into whatever I want. My contract isn't as bad as yours, but still pretty annoying. At least for me. I try not to use it, but like you said, I can be greedy."

A small grin played across his lips. The lid of the can popped open after he cut through it completely and he discarded it to the side of him. He didn't really want to ask for a spoon, so he stuck one of his fingers into the can, and stuck it in his mouth to taste the beans. They were okay, he guessed.

"So..." He mumbled, nibbling on the tip of his finger before removing it from his mouth, "Why are you out here, Storm?"

Storm decided to pry a bit herself. "I like it. So, what's your contract?" She asked bluntly, opening her hand for her knife. Storm had grown rather attached to it over the few years she'd used it to fulfill her contract. It was a love-hate relationship, really.

He noticed the gesture of her outstretched hand. "Only if I can get a spoon for my meal." He requested, closing the knife and then tossing it underhanded towards her. He let himself lean against a stone slab near the fire. It wasn't the best pillow in the world, but it would serve its purpose for the night.

Watching the fire dance in the air, he decided he should probably respond to her question before she thought he had completely ignored her. "Studying." He said, "That is my contract."

He could have been more descriptive, but if she was avoiding his questions than he minus well be just as vague. Sure, she saved his life and all, but she was sort of weird for being out in the middle of no where...alone.

"Live around here?" He decided to try, curious to see her response.

Storm tossed a spoon without another word. "You could be a bit more specific." She noted blandly, zipping her bag closed and swiping her knife from the ground. Tucking it into her sleeve, she frowned at the boy's next question.

"I really think you know the answer to that." She mocked jokingly. "But if you don't, I do actually. I like it here I guess." Storm flicked her knife open and ran her finger along the edge carefully. Ruffling in her thin jacket's pocket, the girl removed a stone for sharpening knives, and began to sharpen hers.

@ems - I get like that sometimes. Hehe. lol
--

He attempted to grab the spoon in mid-air so it wouldn't hit the ground and become covered in dirt, but he miscalculated and it ended up hitting against the side of his thumb and falling into the grass on his right. He reached over and grabbed it off the ground, bringing it up to his face to examine it closer. 'Seems alright.' He thought to himself.

He took a bite of the beans, feeling a grainy texture in his mouth at first, but that went away after a few bites. He paused after the third bite, looking lazily over at Storm. "So could you." He noted, smiling slyly at her.

"I guess I wouldn't blame you. This whole society- or rather this city has been turned into the dumps since the appearance of the gate. People are afraid of us. They think we're some sort of evil, brainless mutants that are out to get them. They're too dumb to realize we are just like them. We're human too." He sighed, "So being protective of your secrets is kind of natural."

He stopped and took another bite of beans. "But we're the same. You and me, we're contractors. We understand each other, so why not drop the protective act and just talk?" He proposed to her.

"Look. I'll start." He set down the can of beans at his side and got to his feet. He struggled a bit though. The natural pain killers from fear and panic had pretty well worn off, so now he could feel the full effects of his wounds. He tried to hide the pain in his face as he walked up to her and held out his hand.

"Hi, I'm Derek. I'm a senior at the local high school who tries to act normal in a society that hates contractors like me. I live in a family who doesn't know about my troubles and I often feel like punching my fist through the wall because of it. Nice to meet you, Storm."

Storm smiled and shook Derek's hand. "Um, ok? Not much to tell, really. Nice to meet you." She replied a little jokingly, pulling back her hand.

"Well, I'm Storm, as you know." Storm started off a little nervously. If she'd ever hated anything, it was revealing secrets. "I'm a 16-year old contractor living like a hobo out in the woods." She laughed at this before deciding to continue. "As soon as my parents found out, they stopped treating me like their daughter, and more of like an exchange student, I guess you could say. They just kept telling me they still loved me no matter what and all that bull crap." Storm rolled her eyes. "It was obvious that they were terrified of me and my powers, and especially my contract. They hate how I have to cut myself, but they were more afraid of me. So I just ran off. I'm sick of the world being scared. I hate what I am. I don't want to die.... But I don't think contractors should take over everything. Or maybe now is the time of the contractors, and the humans' time has come to an end. I could care less either way." Suddenly realizing that she was rambling, Storm decided to leave it at that for now.

"It's all just... Bleh."

Derek chuckled at her explanation a little, but tried to hide it as best as he could. He didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable, especially after he just asked her to trust him. "Well, I wasn't exactly expecting a whole life story from you, but what you said," He paused, looking for the right word, "Really was nice to hear."

After saying what he did, he realized how bad that probably sounded and moved to quickly correct it. "I mean, nice as in to know you're not alone or not going crazy. Aha...Certainly not what you told me, but, you know that, I just..." He stopped himself, smiling, "You know what? Just forget it..."

It was true. He had not met another contractor since he became one. He knew there had to be others out there, but it wasn't till today that he met her; another contractor. It was so nice to just vent to someone who understood everything you were going through. Who didn't hate you for who you were...

While thinking, he unconsciously shifted his weight to his left side, which instantly snapped him out of thought and back to reality. The pain was intense, much worse than it had been. It hurt so bad, he didn't think he could describe how bad it was. He exhaled, 'I was holding my breath?', and stepped back from where he was standing. He felt like he just flipped a switch to shut down his body, everything began to spin and blur, and before he knew it he was falling to the ground.

'Ugh...Why now...?' Was all he could think, before the world turned black for good.

Storm had laughed lightly with Derek. Life story... Whoops. Oh well. Then suddenly he couldn't say anything right, and stumbled back a bit before starting to fall. Cursing under her breath again as she got up to tuck him into her sleeping bag, Storm cringed as the contractor thumped onto the grass.

"You are so feeling that in the morning."

Storm unzipped the sleeping bag and laid it softly over the injured boy. She looked at his bruised face for an awkward moment, deciding that without all the injuries, and in a completely different situation, she might have thought he was a bit cute. Abruptly standing up, Storm stepped over to the other side of the fire and laid down to get some much needed sleep. Her last conscious thoughts were of how late it must be judging by the position of the moon. Then, the darkness of sleep.

(Seems like a good time to foreshadow... )

The night time sky cast over the campsite with the only light coming from their tiny fire. A fire that served much purpose. Not only could it be used to cook food, but also to keep warm. Yet it was through the flames that someone grew curious and came closer.

The presence was a red-eyed girl in her barefeet, walking closer and closer. She felt the contractors' vibrations under her feet, hearing them talking and moving around. She stopped then, right as their figures barely came into view. This was far enough, she could already sense them clearly. She seemed to be watching them, though her eyes showed no life or emotion.

Right as the two turned in for the night, she decided it was time to leave. They would be further observed later and in due time she would meet with them in person. The outcome of the meeting would depend largely on them.

As the girl turned to leave, she remained cold and still as ever. Not evening looking back, she disappeared into the forest.

During his sleep, Derek had many different dreams. Some of them were nice, while others weren't. The one he was currently in was a vicious nightmare. There were sounds of people yelling behind him and loud banging that echoed through the air. He was running, or he felt like he was, but no matter how hard he tried, he just ran too slow. It felt like fifty cement bricks were tied to him. He felt a sharp pain in his side, his eyes quickly darting to the spot to see what had happened. He could see that he was bleeding, but didn't know why or how. The men who were chasing him had finally caught up. They were coming closer... 'No wait, stop!' He screamed in his dream.

His eyes snapped open. They were instantly blinded by bright sunlight, causing him to quickly close them. When he felt that they were adjusted to the morning sun, he slowly opened them back up, blinking in his surroundings. He felt something heavy and warm over top of his body and he was holding the same materiel close to his chest. He could see that Storm's sleeping back was placed over him like a cover, but the question on his mind the most was, 'Where is she?'

He tried sitting up and hoped that nothing would hurt to badly, which it didn't so he was thankful for that. He could see the fire had died down to practically nothing and right next to it Storm was...

"Detective Peters, the boss wants you!" A voice shouted from across the desk-filled room of chaos.

A man stood up from his wooden desk, looking about middle-aged, and walked towards the man who shouted. He entered the glass door that led to the "boss's" office without saying too much and took a seat in one of the chocolate colored leather chairs from across the desk. "Sir?" Peters spoke in a low, but firm voice.

"Ah yes, Peters, I wanted to talk to you about some leads we found on the Madison Case." The other man said. He looked a lot older than Detective Peters, at least in his early fifties. His short cut hair was a light gray and many wrinkles were prominent on his face, but he seemed to have a kind nature to him.

"Go on." Peters responded.

"It seems your assumptions were correct. Madison Fairwell was murdered by a contractor. At first we were unsure, due to the way the body was when we found it, but after closer inspection it appears that her heart had given out under extreme electrical force, not to mention her shoes were taken off her persons and placed neatly next to her body."

"I see. The removing of the victim's shoes was a little peculiar to me..."

"Yes. We believe it is our contractor's price." The boss continued, "I would like you and Detective Volden to investigate further into this case, since you have prior experience with contractors."

"Of course. We'll see what we can do." Peters agreed, standing up and turning to leave the office.

"And Peters..." The boss said, causing the Detective to turn to face him once again, "Please be careful. I don't want to have to bury your body as well..."

Peters nodded and left the office, heading for his partner's desk.

(No worries, I edited.)

EDIT:

Detective Volden was sitting in office, typing up an investigators report from a recently solved case. He sat slumped in the black, leather chair with a pen pointed at his bearded chin in thought. He was trying to think of how to word a cause of death for the victim since it was caused by a contractor and all.

When Peters walked in, Volden smiled. "Ah, there you are. I was just about to send for you. Do you mind handling the forensic side of the report for Case #2045? Your scientific explanations are much better understood."

Storm's chest rose and fell in time with her steady breathing as she slept. Her dreams were of nothing. Storm liked that. In the back of her mind she heard someone moving, and her eyes blinked open. She listened carefully, hearing her sleeping bag shift a bit behind her. Oh right, it must be the--Derek. Storm rubbed the sleep from her eyes and rolled over, noting the fire had died and that she was covered in goosebumps. Storm pulled her knife from her pocket and fingered it decisively before shoving it back into her pocket.

"So... Do you happen to carry a lighter?"

Derek shook his head, frowning. He didn't like how she had to hurt herself just to keep warm every night. Life was really unfair to some people. She wouldn't have to live like this if people would just accept contractors and wouldn't treat them like freaks, or worse, kill them.

"Here." He said softly, pulling off the sleeping bag. He bundled up the warm fabric into a medium-sized ball and threw it over at her.

It was the least he could do since he stole it from her all last night.

He looked over at the crash scene that was a few yards away. He could see his worn, red pickup truck all crushed up in the trees at the base of the steep hill. It was no longer smoking like it was when he first crashed, but the damage on it was pretty severe. "My dad is going to kill me..." He muttered to himself.
--

Peters smiled. "Having trouble with that? Alright, I'll take that off your hands, but we've been assigned another contractor case."

He took a seat at his desk, which was across from his partner's, and ruffled through a pile of papers. After looking for a little bit, he finally found the folder he was looking for and pulled it from the stack. Wetting his finger tips with his tongue, he flipped through the papers inside the folder, double checking the details inside before giving it to his partner. He stood up from his desk once more, flipping the folder closed and taking it over to his partner.

"Here's what we have to work with." He stated, placing the folder on Volden's desk.

Storm wrapped herself up in the thick sleeping bag. "Thanks, but I think you know I'm going to start the fire again anyways." She smirked, and shrugged the blanket off for a moment before scooting to the blackened embers. Only three logs remained, and Storm threw them all in before creating another flame. Tossing it in, she scowled and flipped out her pocket knife again. Blankly, she opened a third cut in her arm. After wrapping this new cut in a bandage, Storm followed the boy's gaze to his truck. /That thing is so totaled./ She thought, nearly cringing.

@kurochi-akuma (Miki, Meta, how many names you using for meh? O.o LOL)

Volden eyed the folder and finished typing up a sentence on the report document. "I'll take a look."

He picks up the folder and opens the contents. Skimming over the details. "Definity a contractor. Mysterious deaths of uncommon cause, plus a consistant key in each scene. We can't exactly rule out the possibility it could be another contractor copy-cat though."

He paused, continuing to read about the victims. "The first was a Caucasion female, Madison Fairwell. She was found lying dead in her home with her pair of shoes neatly lined up next to her body. I remember you mentioned something about this case potentionally getting transferred to our department. Well here it is."

Volden chuckled at his own attempt at humor, continuing to read through the victims' information. "The most recent victims was Harold Verbeke. Same scenerio: died of heart attack and shows were neatly lined up. Oh, here's something peculier. Both victims worked for the same company. A pharmacial company called Institution of Introspect Co. IIC."

Derek tried to ignore her lighting up the fire again and doing...that. He instead focused his mind and gaze on his crashed up car, thinking of ways he could tell his parents about it without having them totally freak-out. Speaking of which, he had to wonder where his parents were and why they weren't driving the street looking for him since he didn't come home last night. 'Maybe they tried to call me?' He thought, deciding he should probably get his bag from his car.

He pushed himself up, so he was on his feet, making sure to keep most of his weight on his right side. He limped away from Storm's campsite, heading towards the truck. He went around to the passenger side door and opened it up. To his surprise, his bag wasn't where he had left it. He bent down, looking on the floor of the truck and saw it stuffed in one of the small crevasses formed from the smashed up front. He was relieved that it wasn't stolen or anything, but the next thing on his mind was if anything was broken in it.

He grabbed it and pulled it out of the hole, then limped back to the campsite.

"If you have to leave, go ahead. My house isn't far from here and I can always just limp to it if my cell is dead" He said to Storm, sitting down against the stone slab once more.

It's not like he wanted her to leave, but she probably had better things to do than to look after him.
--

Peters sat back in his sliding, leather desk chair and leaned back into it. He listened to Volden read off what was in the file while he finished up the report on their last case.

"Definity a contractor. Mysterious deaths of uncommon cause, plus a consistant key in each scene."

He heard Volden say and responded with, "Yea, that's what I thought too."

He continued to type up the report, zoning out more of his partner's talking. It's not like he intended to, but he needed to concentrate on what he was doing. Volden was right. Some of these reports were hard to fill out sometimes...

"Both victims worked for the same company. A pharmacial company called Institution of Introspect Co. IIC." Volden said finally, adding in a pause that caused Peters to look up from his work.

"Yea, its strange, isn't it? Perhaps its worth checking out. See what they're up to there, hm? Victims from the same place may mean our guy works there too or frequents there often..." He inquired, taking his fingers away from the keyboard for a moment.

Storm gave Derek a quizzical look, wiping the blood off of her metal blade. "I don't have anywhere to go or anywhere to be." She shrugged, a little put off by the comment. Storm liked the small companionship she'd formed with the boy overnight. It was just a bit less lonely... But he had a life to get back to, and Storm knew from the start that it was a simple crossing of paths. Simple business. She'd helped him, and he'd have to leave sooner or later. Geez. Storm seriously needed some friends.

Peters fingers glided across the keyboard once more, finishing up the report Volden had started earlier. There was a few moments of silence, before Peters hit the 'enter' button on the keyboard the report was sent to the upper office for review.

He pushed his feet out from under his desk, causing his leather chair to slide back with ease, and then stood up. His hand grabbed an expensive looking black coat off the back of his chair. He looked over toward Volden, "All done. You ready to head out?"

As he waited for a response, he pushed in his chair under his desk and slipped into his coat.

"You seem like the kind of girl who moves around a lot." Derek guessed, "But I'll take your word for it."

He closed his phone and put it back in his bag, then flung that over his right shoulder. Looking back at the poor contractor girl, Derek gave a small, loose wave over his shoulder and headed up the hill towards the road that ran through the forest.

As he walked, he made sure to keep most of the weight on his right side, considering he didn't want another incident of last night to occur now. It was much harder to climb the semi-steep hill now that he was slightly injured, but never-the-less he managed to get to the top and on to the roadway.

He then headed up the road and around a curve, disappearing from the view of Storm.

For a place that was only up the road by car, it sure was far when you were walking to it. It had been 15 minutes by the time he got to Meadow Dr. He had to admit, he was already exhausted. Still having motivation to pull forward, he headed down that roadway, eventually coming to the light blue house on the right.

His lungs huffed out air and his breath was in short, strong wisps as he headed up the stairs and through the front door.

'Man, it's good to be home.' He thought.

Storm sighed. "All right, alone again. What is it that I do for fun again...?" She wondered aloud, studying her campfire as it crackled. "I suppose some arson would be fun, but that requires more pain and risks than I'd like... Great, I'm talking to myself. Perhaps I should go into town. The cops could find me, and I'm a minor..." Storm huffed, at an impasse with herself. "Bah, screw the cops. I'm not going to sit and go batty." So she stood and dumped water on her fire, stomping it out regretfully before packing her things back into her bag, and setting off for the city.

"Where am I heading?" He asks Volden, calmly surveying traffic as he drives.
