It’s fairly obvious when you think about it.” I explained in a firm tone. “How come you guys can’t figure that out? It’s common knowledge.” “Madpaw, we’ve got to go.” Nightpaw meowed and bounded off towards her mentor while Shadowpaw slid off to the other side of camp to talk to his mentor. I looked up as Stormbranch walked over to me. I faked a smile and followed him as we followed the well-worn trail leading to the lake. Border patrol. I realized. Fun. I thought angrily, Why can’t we practice battle moves or hunting? Why is it always border patrols? I snarled to myself quietly as we neared the edge. I caught scent of the border markers and waited as Stormbranch remarked them. Them noticing an off scent and stronger reek of ferns I walked over to the first marker her replaced. “Stormbranch!” I yowled out. “We have an intruder over here.” I meowed seeing the paw prints and fresh covering of fern scent. “Still fresh, we can catch up to them if we hurry!” “Madpaw, good thinking and excellent deduction. You’re almost ready for an assessment.” My mentor purred. “Let’s head to camp real quick get another tracker and let’s find that rogue.” “But he could already be gone!” I meowed in anguish. “Let me follow him and you can catch up with the tracker. Please!” I shuffled my paws in eagerness to get moving and kept glancing over my shoulder and started almost bouncing on my paws. “Fine. But don’t, under any circumstances attack the rogue.” My mentor meowed his light tone hardening. “Of course. I would never attack without your permission.” I meowed happily already turning and bounding off. The rogue scent slowly became clearer the farther from the border I walked. I turned and looked trying to see Stormbranch past all the trees and undergrowth but it was useless. The only thing I could see was mist from the lake. As I rounded the last the rogue scent got even fresher. I skidded to a stop just outside a clump of bushes and snarled; “Come out! I know you’re in there!” All caution forgotten, I stood outside, my eyes blazing and claws digging into the soft grass outside the bushes. “Come on out. I’m not going to hurt you.” I sighed after several heartbeats of prolonged silence. I barely had time to react before a brown tabby she-cat burst out of the bushes and stood paws splayed, eyes blazing and teeth bared. Yet once she saw me her anger died and she smirked at me. “If it isn’t little Brownie.” She purred in a honeyed voice as she sat down. “Now, is that any way to treat your mum?”
