The answer to the raven question is honestly:

"The Mad Hatter admitted he didn't know", because Caroll never intended for there to be an answer. That said... in a later edition of the book Wonderland he wrote -

“Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!”

The connecting thread is a "misspelled" never - which is actually raven backwards. It's not very clever, but an answer is an answer.
